On November 2 Junior Achievement of San Diego County hosted the 29th Annual San Diego Business Hall of Fame at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. This year’s Laureates are Janice Brown, Wendy Gillespie, Jack McGrory and Lori and Bill Walton. The event raised $316,900 to support JA’s mission to impact 81,000 students by teaching them how to get a job, start a business and how to manage their money. Jack in the Box Foundation was the Presenting Sponsor. Other sponsors included Balfour Beatty Construction, US Bank, Kaiser Permanente and BofI Federal Bank.

Wells Fargo and Military Warriors Support Foundation held a presentation on November 11 at the Harbor in downtown San Diego during the Veterans Day Parade. Shanna Whitney, Gold Star wife of U.S. Army Sergeant Brian Pedro, received a new Ford Expedition, with assistance from Perry Ford of Poway. U.S. Army Sergeant Brian Pedro, was killed in action in Afghanistan.

Wells Fargo and Military Warriors Support Foundation

The 16th annual Celebration of Hope Gala was held on November 4 at the Pendry Hotel. The event, presented by the San Diego Chapter of Huntington’s Disease Society of America, raised $250,000. The goal of the Celebration is to raise awareness about the nature of HD while honoring those living with HD as well as those making a difference in the mission t o find a cure. The 2017 Guthrie Award, was presented to Chris Berman, ESPN sports broadcaster. Event sponsors included DLA Piper, Microsoft, Pendry San Diego and the San Diego Half Marathon.

The second annual Scripps Coastchella benefit concert was held on October 19 at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. The event raised $320,000 to help purchase lifesaving surgical equipment at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. Sponsors included Drs. Gil and Jenny Galloway, Glenbrook Health Center and Scripps Health Inpatient Providers Medical Group.

The Second Chance Youth Garden received the Qualcomm-sponsored audience choice award of $10,000 at the Mission Edge event on October 24 at the Irwin M. Jacobs Hall at Qualcomm. Second Chance won the social enterprise for the San Diego Accelerator and Impact Lab (SAIL) Pitch Night. Sponsored by The San Diego Foundation, Union Bank, Qualcomm and Cox Communications, the SAIL Pitch Night highlighted the social enterprise ideas of organizations who created cutting-edge, sustainable, revenue-based business models in alignment with their social missions.

As part of the Thank Our Heroes campaign, AT&T teamed up with zero8hundred to recognize our nation’s heroes and support zero8hundred’s efforts in serving active military families in the San Diego region. AT&T’s contribution of $25,000 supports the military transition program and brings AT&R Digital You safety and security training to San Diego area veterans and their spouses.

The Garfield High School Foundation’s Culinary Arts Program held its 20th Thanksgiving meal on November 16 at the Prado restaurant in Balboa Park. All food and materials were donated by David and Lesley Cohn, owners of the Cohn Restaurant Group. All proceeds from the luncheon go toward the Garfield High School Foundation to fund educational programs and additional school organizations. The Culinary Arts Program gives at-risk youth an opportunity to obtain skills in the restaurant field and succeed in the future work force.

Danny Sherlock of San Diego was named a 2017 Maytag Dependable Leader Award winner for his demonstrated dedication to keeping youth on the path to achieve great futures. The award recognized Boys & Girls Club staff and volunteers who are committed to making a difference as dependable and exceptional role models. Sherlock was one of 10 winners nationwide which includes a $20,000 financial grant for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. The grant will be used for scholarships to cover Club enrollment costs.

2017 Maytag Dependable Leader Award

Verizon is donating $90,000 to five community based organizations and charities ranging from services that include violence and abuse intervention services, STEM learning experiences, CleanTech job preparation, and vaccinations for at-risk populations. Those receiving funds include $20,000 for Center for Community Solutions; $25,000 Ruben H. Fleet Center; $20,000 BioCom’s STEM; $15,000 CleanTech San Diego; and $10,000 Downtown San Diego Partnership’s Hep A vaccinations.

On November 10, San Diego Habitat for Humanity volunteers worked alongside volunteers from the Wounded Warrior Project, Team Rubicon, and active duty military personnel to build a home at Habitat’s Comm22 construction site in Logan Heights. The home will be purchased by a single father and Navy veteran.
