The Mission Fed Community Relations team raised $12,000 to benefit American Heart Association San Diego Division’s “Go Red for Women” campaign. Throughout January and February, Mission Fed collected donations through online donations and the 30 branches along with members and staff. The Go Red for Women was held on February 24 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar and raised $370,000 for the fight against heart disease and stroke in women. UC San Diego Health was the cause sponsor. Other sponsors were Great Call, ImpediMed, and Toft Group Executive Search.

The S. Mark Taper Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego to provide lodging, meals and other services that help keep families close to one another and the care they need when their child is being treated for a serious, often life-threatening condition. “Private support is key to ensuring we can provide a place for families to take care of themselves, so they can care for their critically ill or injured children,” said Chuck Day, president and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego.

The Neonatal Research Institute at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns has been awarded a $2.9 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue research on umbilical cord milking and its benefits to premature babies. The grant, from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the NIH, will enable the NRI to lead a multicenter international trial analyzing outcomes of cord milking compared to delayed cord clamping in premature infants at nine sites, including three in other countries.
