Sharp Receives $1 Million Grant to Support CAP

On June 27, Sharp hosted the kickoff event for the Child and Adolescent (CAP) unit renovation project at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital. Robert Price and members of Price Philanthropies were there to announce their grant of $1,015,000 to support the project, which includes a matching gift challenge of $415,000. This unit serves children ages 5–17 facing mental illness related to depression, anxiety, challenges with family and school, and some dealing with substance abuse and developmental disabilities.

Mission Federal Credit Union raised $21,585 together with the Miracle Match program from CO-OP Financial Services during the Miracle Month of May. Part of Credit Union for Kids, Miracle Month of May included participation via selling paper Miracle Balloons for $1. The funds raised go to Rady Children’s Hospital to help make miracles happen for sick and injured kids and to help heal patients. Another Mission Fed event was held on June 19, when they joined San Diego Unified School District officals and the San Diego Pad Squad at a barbecue to kick-off the Summer Fun Café program, which gives children the nutritious meals they need to keep them from hunger and remain healthy throughout the summer.

The second annual Oggi’s LaDainian Tomlinson Celebrity Golf Tournament was held at Sycuan Golf Resort on June 8. Proceeds benefit the Tomlinson’s Touching Lives Foundation and its programs in Southern California, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego.

San Diego Oasis

San Diego Oasis held a Grand Opening Ceremony of their new Lifelong Learning Center and Wellness Center on June 7 at Grossmont Center mall in La Mesa. Marylen Mann, the national founder of The Oasis Institute, was in attendance for the celebration. Oasis supports successful aging by offering classes and programs to anyone over the age of 50 in Lifelong Learning, Healthy Living, and Volunteer Community Engagement throughout San Diego County.

Bank of America announced $417,000 in economic mobility grants to 65 nonprofits working to increase basic needs, workforce development, and education opportunities in San Diego. The nonprofits receiving funding are addressing this gap by connecting youth to first-time jobs, giving young adults pathways to employment and providing second chances to people ready to rebuild careers. Organizations receiving grants include Alpha Project for the Homeless, Asian Business Association Foundation, Barrio Logan College Institute, and Jewish Family Service of San Diego.

Grossmont Healthcare District

The Grossmont Healthcare District received a $150,000 grant from Volunteers in Medicine San Diego. The grant will assist with paying for diagnostic lab tests and fees, as well as medical supplies for uninsured residents in East County. Michael Emerson, GHD board president, said, “We are proud to support Volunteers in Medicine and their mission to improve access to health care for America’s underserved, particularly the uninsured, by relying on volunteer medical professionals, including retired doctors and nurses.”

Feeding San Diego received a $75,000 donation from the Walmart Foundation to help the relief organization distribute more nutritious food to San Diegans struggling with hunger. This grant will support equipment needs to handle perishable food and maintain food safety.

San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy

The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy received a $5,000 Environmental Champions grant from SDG&E and a $1,300 grant from the Solana Beach Fund at the Coastal Community Foundation to enable the conservancy to present nature-based experiences through the Watershed Explorers program.
