Soil Shindig

WHEN: November 18, 9:30 a.m.–2 p.m.

WHERE: Tijuana River Valley Regional Park, Wild Willow Farm and Education Center, and Tijuana River Valley Community Garden

Dirt party. Oh, hell yes. Just sounds good and visceral. Anyone who’s spent any time being partially interested in food, gardening, growing their own food, or even simply eating has come to realize that one of the most important things for growing real, good, nutritious food is DIRT. Soil. First time someone told me about soil, I was prepared for a snoozefest. But honestly, it’s some of the most fascinating concepts in the food chain. So if you wanna edify yourself, this is your morning jaunt—a day-long, family-friendly celebration of healthy soil, sustainability, and food in the Tijuana River Valley. There’ll be workshops, demos, food trucks, farm tours, trail walks, kids activities, vendors, horse and carriage rides, live music, etc.

SoNo Chili Cook-Off

WHEN: December 3, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

WHERE: Thorn and 32nd Street

North Park is our plucky epicenter of creative businesses—a handful of streets where indies have flourished with requisite quirks and funks. It’s also the spot where San Diego’s food scene really took off a decade ago, and still boasts some of the best in the city. As for this event? It’s a chili cookoff. If you don’t love the idea of sampling chili from over 40 restaurants, then you may be dead inside. Carnitas Snack Shack, Burger Lounge, Hamilton’s, Tiger Tiger, Tribute Pizza, Soda & Swine, Station, Waypoint Public… you name it, they’re all here. There’ll be live bands on three stages and a KidsFest—since the proceeds will go to benefit the local McKinley Elementary school.

COST: Free ($20 for tasting)
