Best Things I Ate This Month: February 2017

For next month’s review in the magazine, I visited the newly remodeled Hake on Prospect Street in La Jolla. Oh, what a view. Immediately one of the best in the city if you get one of those tables by the windows. One of chef Aarti Sanghavi’s star dishes is a simple side dish. Roasted carrots glazed in piloncillo (a Mexican brown sugar), goat cheese, sesame seeds, and carrot top chimichurri. An absolute stunner.

Galaxy Taco—the Baja-inspired riff from chefs Trey Foshee and Christine Rivera of George’s at the Cove—is now doing Sunday brunch in La Jolla Shores. I sampled their menu over the weekend, and found a bunch of winners, including their heirloom blue corn pancakes and the chilaquiles. But it was this posole verde—an herbal riff on the classic Mexican stew—that floored us. It’s a warm bowl of pulled pork, bright herbal stew, blue and white hominy, cilantro, and avocado. A new riff on a Baja classic. Tip: Galaxy is the only restaurant in the Shores with its own 14-space parking lot, so you don’t have to hunt for street parking.

The cover story of this month’s magazine is “103 Dishes to Eat Before You Die,” a list of the best things I’ve eaten over my 10 years in San Diego as a food writer. Of those, few have been around longer than Café 222’s pumpkin waffles, a simple, autumnal presentation of breakfast. It’s basically fluffy pumpkin pie for breakfast with candied pecans and fresh whipped cream. No wonder it’s been on the menu for 25 years. It’s an absolute win.
