Sophisticated Fiesta

Jennifer Kuhrts & Karl WeingartenA DOCTOR MARRYING A NURSE may not be the most unusual love story, but Karl Weingarten and Jennifer (“Quinta”) Kuhrts’ wedding was anything but ordinary. Born and raised in San Diego, Jennifer met Karl while working at Scripps Mercy Hospital, where Karl was an interventional radiologist. The two dated for three years and both relocated to Augusta, Georgia for work. When it came time to plan the wedding, they wanted to tie the knot somewhere significant.

“Our home in La Jolla really strikes a chord as a meaningful place for us as we have spent so much time renovating it and living in the chaos of construction,” Jennifer says. “Karl proposed to me in the backyard. So we decided there just wasn’t a better place to have the wedding.”

Despite having to plan the event from afar and the house not being finished, the two created an unforgettable fiesta. “We went outside the boundaries of a typical cookie-cutter wedding and really focused on making sure our guests had a good time,” Jennifer says.

The first decision involved the Chula Vista High School Mariachi Band. While neither Jennifer nor Karl has Mexican roots, they loved the soulful music of this particular band—and it even inspired the theme of the wedding.

Karl wore a stunning custom traje suit—traditional northern Mexican wedding attire—consisting of a vibrant red jacket, red-and-white pants with silver spurs and a black monos scarf embroidered with each of their names. The groomsmen wore the same incredibly detailed suits with stately black sombreros. Red became the featured color as the bridesmaids wore simple black dresses with fire-truck-red pumps and carried red gerbera daisies with a single flower tucked behind the ear. In a nod to old Hollywood, Jennifer wore a glamorous Rivini dress and carried a riot of colorful daisies.

The wedding and reception blended casual fun with refined elegance. As guests arrived they were offered delicious fare from a street taco vendor who served authentic carne and pollo asado off the grill. A full-blown petting zoo replete with a z-donk (a zebra-donkey mix), horses and other furry creatures provided excitement for the kids.

The couple, encircled by their guests, exchanged vows at sunset. “During our ceremony, the sheep kept bleating, which broke the ice and made me less nervous,” says Jennifer, laughing.

Clearly, both she and Karl have a great sense of humor. The wedding cake sported plastic animals with a male and female farmer on top. A bin of gag toys including fake mustaches, giant sunglasses and silly string provided more entertainment for guests big and small. A photo booth encouraged guests to take both comical and sentimental pictures for the couple. One side of the house hosted a collage of photos of family and friends over the years. “It was a cool way to celebrate our families and lives with this giant patchwork of images,” says Jennifer.

Upscale caterer Giuseppe’s of La Jolla served a gourmet buffet. Guests sat at tables by the pool, where black sombreros carrying votive candles floated peacefully. A modern lounge area and bar dressed in white with great lighting and giant red lanterns took up another quadrant of the backyard. It was the perfect setting for friends to imbibe in Jennifer’s homemade sangria, mojitos and margaritas, or catch up over Cuban cigars. The mariachi band performed twice to the roaring cheers of the crowd. By the end of the evening, groomsmen were riding horses, and Jennifer’s tiny dog Chancho (one of eight owned by the couple and, appropriately, a Chihuahua) took his place by the bride.

“For me, the best part was that all of my favorite people came together and had such a good time,” Jennifer says.

Ole.
