A Champion Jockey’s Race to Recovery

A debilitating spinal injury threatened Victor Espinoza's career, but with the help of Scripps, he hopes to get back in the saddle

After Triple-Crown winning jockey Victor Espinoza was thrown from a horse during a practice ride, the severity of his injuries left him worried he’d never race again. If the trauma to the vertebrae in his neck had been any worse, Espinoza may have been rendered quadriplegic. Cervical fusion surgery would have crushed any hope for a comeback, so his doctors prescribed a regimen of intensive physical therapy and rehabilitation at Scripps Encinitas. Now nine months out, Espinoza isn’t quite ready to race again, but he’s moving in the right direction. Read more about his recovery here, and just the rehab process entails here.
