KPBS Celebrates the Arts was held on April 22 at the US Grant Hotel. The event showcased a variety of art forms including the visual arts, dance, music and literature. Susan Polis Schutz and Stephen Schutz were recognized as the 2017 KPBS Hall of Fame Visionary honorees for their longtime support of public media. The $200,000 was raised in support of KPBS. Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Jackson Design and Remodeling and Scripps were sponsors of the event.

David Gubser has established a $200,000 endowment through his estate that will support scholarships for LGBT students as well as Critical Gender Studies majors at UC San Diego. Although Gubser had no prior affiliation with UC San Diego, he chose to support the university along with several other local education institutions and LGBT community organizations. Half of his planned gift will go to support the LGBT Undergraduate Scholarship Program, which recognizes and supports the academic excellence of lesian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students at UC San Diego.

Encore Capital group donated $30,000 to San Diego Habitat for Humanity. On April 22, 40 employee volunteers helped build the first of 5 homes in El Cajon that will eventually have local families in affordable homes. On April 26, SDHFH broke ground at an affordable housing community in the Logan Heights community. The houses will be built by Habitat’s 7,000 annual volunteers along with the future homeowners of the 11 new homes. Habitat received support from BRIDGE Housing, the MAAC Project, Home Depot, TD Ameritrade, Wells Fargo, Realty Income and JP Morgan Chase.

Susan G. Komen San Diego is presenting “The Suzy Awards” on May 9 at the Hilton Bayfront San Diego. $1.2 million will award grants to fund free breast cancer services and research to their nonprofit and research partners. Those being honored are: Community Partner of the Year: Sycuan Casino, Legislator of the Year: Senator Toni Atkins, 39th Senate District, Partner in the Promise:Teresa Blanco, Northgate Gonzalez Markets, Our Mensch: Marsha Friend Bergson,Empowering Women 125: ZLAC and Grantee of the Year: Vista Community Clinic. Some of those receiving grants are 2-1-1 San Diego, Community Health Imaging Centers, Family Health Centers of San Diego, Health Quality Partners, Jewish Family Service of San Diego and Mama’s Kitchen.

United Way of San Diego County is holding its “Changing The Odds Community Breakfast on May 10 at San Diego Convention Center. Champion Sponsor is Solar Turbines. Visionary Sponsor is SDGE, a Sempra Energy utility. Other sponsors include Higgs Fletcher & Mack, California Bank & Trust and GEICO. Katherin Stuart Faulconer, First Lady of San Diego is Honorary Chair.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has honored Carlsbad resident Tricia Bothmer with its 2016 Community Engagement Volunteer of the Year award. The award was presented at the National MS Society’s Annual Meeting for the Pacific South Coast Chapter. Bothmer was honored for founding “Hit an Ace for MS”, a tennis tournament started in 2013. The 2017 tournament is scheduled for Nov. 5.

The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties is kicking off its Annual Shelter of Hope event on May 1. As part of the campaign, Regional Red Cross CEO Bill Earley and other participants will remain in a simulated disaster shelter until this year’s $500,000 fundraising goal is reached. Shelter of Hope was developed in San Diego as a way to draw awareness and raise funds toward fulfilling the Red Cross mission.
