The San Diego Opera held a celebration to support the Opera’s 2015-16 season on Jan. 30 at Liberty Station. This is the first season under the direction of General Director, David Bennet.

Sycuan Casino was the Presenting Sponsor. Other sponsors and underwriters included Sandra Lawhon, Chair of Swing & Bling, and Carol Lazier, Chair of the Opera board, along with John Rebelo and Sarah B. Marsh-Rebelo (the evening’s honoree) and Zandra Rhodes and Salah Hassanein. A total of $200,000 was raised to support and expand the education and outreach efforts of the Opera.

SAN DIEGO HUMAN DIGNITY FOUNDATION

SAN DIEGO HUMAN DIGNITY FOUNDATION

The San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative, a grant program of San Diego Human Dignity Foundation, held its luncheon on Jan. 29 at the San Diego Foundation. Representatives from 11 nonprofits were assembled to celebrate the gifts of critical funds from HFC to support their HIV/AIDS programs and services. A total of $215,000 were donated to organizations such as Being Alive, Christie’s Place, Mama’s Kitchen, San Diego Volunteer Lawyer’s Program and San Ysidro Health Centers. In 2016 SDHDF will celebrate its 20th anniversary and will support consumers living with HIV through the advocacy initiative, AIDS Watch.

The Living Coast Discovery Center received a 2016 field trip grant from the National Park Foundation to fund transportation for the Center’s Refuge Living Labs program which is supported by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Refuge Living Labs’ field trip gives students an opportunity to explore the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The grant which is part of the Foundation’s Open OutDoors for Kids program, supports the White House youth initiative Every Kid in a Park.

The GROW Fund, a program developed by Organics Unlimited, has granted $150,000 to Project Amigo for 2016 program support. Jenna Saldaña, co-executive director of Project Amigo said “With this grant, GROW scholars will continue working toward their dreams of completing university, finding employment in their field and breaking out of the cycle of poverty their families have been caught in.”

San Diego Financial Literacy Center received a $28,000 contribution from the Foundation for Financial Planning to assist with the creation of the Financial Education Alliance of San Diego.

The alliance brings together 9 organizations to provide financial empowerment and resources to at-risk and low-income residents. Organizations involved in the FEASD include San Diego OASIS, Live Well San Diego and Military Veteran’s Resource Center. The goal is to develop a collective impact that will have far reaching benefits for the entire community.

United Through Reading received a $25,000 gift from AT&T Corporation in support of their efforts to bridge the distance for military families who are separated by deployment, training or active-duty assignment by facilitating the bonding experience of reading aloud together. “AT&T is proud to support United Through Reading,” said Ignacio De La Torre, Regional VP of AT&T California. “And to help connect families of active military soldiers to their kids back home.”

The Fourth Annual 5K Paw Walk in the Garden is being held on Feb. 20. Rancho Coastal Huane Society and the San Diego Botanic Garden join paws to support programs for people, plants, and animals. It is the only day when dogs are allowed in the SDBG.
