Get outside and appreciate your Mother Earth with these local programs for kids and adults
  • Pay a visit to the California Wolf Center in Julian, where you can get up close and pet wolves while learning about their recovery.
  • You can also meet rescued bobcats, llamas, tigers, and more at Lions, Tigers, & Bears Sanctuary, a 93-acre refuge in Alpine dedicated to saving these creatures from the exotic animal trade.
  • The Agua Caliente Regional Park in Julian has guided nature hikes and presentations on birds and animal wildlife, all of which are free if you camp in the park.
  • Or, visit the Louis A. Stelzer County Park in Lakeside for discovery days focusing on owls, raccoons, and coyotes, plus craft classes and a lesson on how to make a sundial.
  • At Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center in National City, kids can learn about organic gardening and more.
  • The Santa Ysabel West Preserve offers night hikes and astronomy lessons, including a chance to view Jupiter through a professional telescope.
  • Camp and stargaze at Oakoasis Preserve in Lakeside; they’re hosting a meteor shower viewing party on May 5.
  • Pitch a tent at Mount Laguna, Palomar Mountain State Park, and Paso Picacho in Julian, or go beachfront at San Elijo and South Carlsbad State Beach Campgrounds (reservations required).
