Beats in the City

Music fills the air, with everything from classical, jazz and folk to rock ‘n' roll and electronica enlivening the city.

Sycuan, US GRANT, and the Downtown Partnership present the Sounds of Summer, a free pop-up concert series in conjunction with Pacific Records and Gigtown. Look for local favorite bands like Joe Cardillo and 22 Kings performing at venues around town.

The Hard Rock Hotel’s Float makes a big splash with their famed pool parties. Float’s Social Saturdays pair sunny afternoons and swimming with stellar DJ mashups. Noon to 6 p.m., 21+, no cover.

Big names and big fun can be found at the Summer Pops concert series at Embarcadero Marina Park South. Acts include Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (July 17-18), Ben Folds (July 30), LeAnn Rimes (Aug. 21-22), and legend Burt Bacharach (Aug. 16). And of course, there’s the Star Spangled Pops (July 3-5) conducted by Bill Conti with fireworks galore, along with the orchestra’s grand finale—the 1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular (Sept. 4-6).
