Real estate moguls Matthew and Iris Strauss purchased the 6,000-square-foot dwelling, situated directly next door to their own art-filled private residence, in 1999. “We more or less took it down to the base, with an eye toward turning it into an art gallery,” Iris says. Ever since, it’s held the Strauss Family Foundation, a contemporary art collection that steadily expanded with the Strausses’ trips to Miami’s Art Basel, the Venice Biennale, and other renowned art fairs. Today, the collection is valued at approximately $20 million, according to the family.

But, soon, all that art will move to a new home: In October 2023, the Strauss family donated the entire collection to UC San Diego. They also gave the foundation house, which will be sold to create an endowment fund for the art’s maintenance. UCSD, in turn, is building a museum as part of the incoming Triton Center, a new central campus hub that will also include an alumni building. Named The Strauss, the arts space is slated to open in fall 2026.

It’s a natural progression of the Strausses’ longtime vision. “Mom and Dad always felt it was very important that the art be seen by the public,” says the couple’s son, Steven Strauss.

New $1M Grant Helps Local Art Historians Preserve the PastRELATED ARTICLE

The foundation offered 12 to 15 pre-booked tours a year. Matthew, who passed away in August 2024 at the age of 91, particularly enjoyed welcoming student visitors and often led tours himself. “He loved it when they would come in with their phones and then, after a few minutes, they would put their phone away, and they’d start looking at the art and they’d start asking questions,” Steven remembers.

The family has also been deeply involved with UCSD for years. After their two daughters passed away from cancer, Matthew and Iris became leaders at UC San Diego Health, donating significant funds to research a cancer vaccine and establishing the Iris and Matthew Strauss Center for Early Detection of Ovarian Cancer. Steven and his wife funded the new Steven Strauss and Lise Wilson Cardiomyopathy Center in 2021. However, they dreamed of doing more for the campus’s arts scene, as well.

“[Matthew] used to say, ‘Every great institution has a museum,’” Iris recalls. “‘You look at Yale, you look at Harvard, you look at Stanford—they all have an art museum. We should have one here [at UCSD], too.’”

The museum’s presence on campus will offer students increased opportunities to do what Matthew didn’t: get into art in their youth.

“My husband never really knew anything about art, and he was never that interested. He was too busy being a businessman,” Iris says of the early days of their marriage. “I was an art major in school, so I knew something. Once we got the house [in the 1980s], we started looking at the walls. We said, ‘We need art. It’s empty.’”

They began by hiring an art consultant, but within two months, Matthew’s curiosity had grown. The couple elected to handle acquisition themselves. “We decided we wanted art of our time,” Iris adds. They began attending art fairs and then became involved with the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla.

“Once we joined the museum, we really got going,” Iris says. “The director at that time was Hugh Davies, and he had arranged a trip for collectors to go to Documenta in Germany, which was and is one of the greatest art shows ever. We signed up—our kids were grown and married, our grandchildren in college, so we went and we made friends there.” Among them were Irwin Jacobs and his late wife Joan, who became Iris’ best friend. “We really saw art,” Iris continues. “Oh, boy, we saw great art, and that really was it.”

By 2009, ArtNews Magazine named the couple among the world’s top 200 collectors. Matthew eventually wrote a 600-page almanac documenting more than 860 major artists of the last 800 years. But he maintained an interest in up-and-coming, boundary-pushing creatives, as well.

“He wouldn’t just look for the most pleasing pieces, but pieces that he thought were unique, the best work of the artist, maybe challenging,” Steven says. When the Strausses began separating the foundation collection from their personal one, those edgier, younger works became the focus of the former.

New acquisitions, commissions, and exhibitions at The Strauss museum will share that polestar. “It’s really where contemporary art will meet technology,” says Jess Berlanga Taylor, director and curator of UCSD’s Stuart Collection. She’s leading the creation of The Strauss. “We’re also asking ourselves what the future of art is through our programs. We’ll be presenting immersive environments. We’ll be working with augmented realities and VR and AI and everything that digital artists are doing nowadays.”

She wants the museum to be a “portal”—to a place both familiar and transformative. “Most museums are still based on the 18th-century tradition in which art is in one place, and life happens elsewhere. That is something that doesn’t work for our societies nowadays. So we’re really looking at creating a space where it’s truly social, and you’re surrounded by art,” Taylor says. “We’re hoping that, because of one of our exhibitions, you suddenly feel connected to something much bigger than yourself.”

For her part, Iris’ dream is to drive a new generation of art lovers. “I hope that [visiting The Strauss] enhances their way of thinking, or perhaps even their life, because art just does that for you,” she says. “It would be very empty to live without it.”

The foundation house—mostly devoid of furniture but nearly bursting at the seams with color and history—is proof.

A grieving woman in ‘90s Ohio comes to terms with the loss of her sister through an action-packed Dungeons & Dragons adventure in She Kills Monsters. Directed by Heather Megill and written by Qui Nguyen, this story uses the fantasy role-playing game as a unique storytelling vehicle, with the protagonist becoming immersed in a world of beasts, battles and realizations. Inspired by a recently found seaweed scrapbook from the 1880s, Miriello has crafted a testament to the world’s unseen natural artifacts. The free opening reception will take place on Friday night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Studio Culture (the former Woodbury School of Architecture), with a live DJ, food truck, beer and coffee. Read by Alexander and Altman, Episodes is a braided narrative of memory. The authors, both San Diego natives, take turns recounting stories of their budding friendship in their 20s and building on each other’s recollections of their deepening connection. It’s an impressive feat, both in intimacy and structure.

Along the way, Alexander fills in the gaps of her childhood, recounting how abuse at a young age shaped much of her experience as an adult. The story traverses decades, culminating in a touching act of friendship in which Altman flies to Mexico on a rescue mission to find Alexander naked on the streets of Playa del Carmen in the midst of a manic bipolar episode triggered by IVF treatments. 

San Diego Magazine checked in with Alexander and Altman ahead of the audio book launch to find out more about the project. 

How did the idea for Episodes come about?

Mara Altman (MA): I always write about personal stuff and taboo subjects. Kat and I were navigating her recent bipolar diagnosis and some intense manic episodes. I was working on another writing project, but I kept thinking about the experiences we shared during her mania. Finding her on the streets in Mexico was a huge part of that. It felt important to show people what a mental health crisis really looks like and the ripple effects it has on family, friends, and community.

What’s the heart of this project for you both?

Kat Alexander (KA): I like to say it’s a love story about me and my best friend. This project isn’t about me being defined by my trauma, my infertility, or my diagnosis. Mara captures me and our friendship with humor and heart, and she’s helped me learn how to have healthy boundaries.

MA: I’d call it a love story, too—two best friends navigating an intense mental health crisis. It’s a window into what it means to experience psychosis triggered by IVF treatment and the fallout of that, especially given our fractured mental health care system.

Kat, how did you feel when Mara proposed co-writing this with you?

KA: It was serious for me. I mean, I burned out in my previous work, and I’ve learned that you can’t try to save the world when you’re struggling to get through each day. So I told Mara I’d need space if I needed breaks and that I had to write this for myself. I wasn’t going to try to save the world with this book—it was just about telling the story as it happened.

How did you structure your writing process for such a personal story?

MA: It was a slow peeling back of layers. I started by writing my perspective as a foundation, then added questions for Kat. We’d get together, take long walks, [and] talk it out, or I’d write while she dictated. Sometimes she’d free-associate memories, and, later, she’d go back and add more detail. As she healed, Kat remembered more, and we kept building from there.

Was it challenging to tell this story, given how memory can be affected by trauma and mental health struggles?

KA: Memory was definitely a hurdle. After my first psychotic episode, I was overwhelmed by grief, feeling like my life as I knew it was over. Mara would gently help me recall certain moments. This process was incredibly healing for me—it gave me the space to process what had happened.

Who are you hoping to reach with Episodes?

MA: For me, I hope to give people a window into what a mental health crisis looks like, to show them the human side behind the headlines about mental health. I want people to understand that a crisis can happen to anyone.

KA: There’s an epidemic of unresolved trauma, and it can lead to addiction, health issues, and so much more. This is an invitation for anyone with unresolved trauma or who’s going through a crisis to find hope. I also hope it shows that mental illness is not what defines a person.

Can you tell us about one of the most challenging aspects of this project?

KA: Grief was a big part of it. After my first psychotic episode, I lost a lot—friends, relationships, stability. Mara would scoop me up and gently help me recall certain moments. It was intense, but healing.

Did you learn anything surprising about mental health in the process?

MA: Definitely. I’ve learned a lot about managing mental health, even joining a call with Kat’s psychiatrist to better understand her medication adjustments. It was a whole new layer of insight for me as a journalist and friend.

What’s one thing you learned or are particularly proud of in this project?

KA: I’m proud that Mara and I are still friends, even closer. Writing a project like this can strain any relationship, and we’ve definitely had hard moments, but it’s made us stronger.

MA: I’ve learned so much about mental health. This project taught me to be patient and compassionate, and it’s changed my understanding of what it means to be there for someone going through a mental health crisis.

Q: What’s the message you want people to take from this story?

MA: I want people to break the stigma around mental health issues. And ultimately, we’re just telling the story of what happened—people can take from it what they need. We always felt that we didn’t need to do too much, the story is enough.

KA: Healing is possible.

Alexander and Altman will celebrate the release of Episodes on Tuesday, November 12, at 6 p.m. at Bivouac Adventure Lodge in North Park (3980 30th Street).

“Midnight at the Never Get” at Diversionary Theatre

In Mark Sonnenblick’s “Midnight at the Never Get,” a queer romance set in 1965 Greenwich Village clashes with the onset of the gay rights movement in New York City, with the story centered around intimate performances in an illegal backroom club called The Never Get. There will be informative and interactive post-show happy hours with director Stephen Brotebeck and members of the artistic team following the shows on Thursday and Sunday. Tickets are ranging from $11.50 to $41.50 for this musical, with daily performances Thursday through Sunday.

The San Diego Opera kicks off its 60th season with a performance of their first-ever production, “La bohème” by Giacomo Puccini, at the Civic Theatre. The opera follows the timeless love story of two bohemian artists in 19th century Paris, with Lidiya Yankovskaya making her San Diego Opera debut as she conducts the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. In a display of border region collaboration, Tijuana art studio Ángulo Galeria will host the works of San Diego-based artists Kathleen Kane-Murrell and Alexander Arshansky, while Sparks Gallery receives artwork from Tijuana artists Jessica Sanchez and Aida Urbina. This concurrent exhibition, highlighting the thriving artistic exchange between Baja California and Southern California, will run through November 30 at both galleries. Mark your calendars: an opening reception will be held for the exhibition on Thursday, November from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

More Than Pink Walk

Show your support for survivors of metastatic breast cancer by taking part in the More Than Pink Walk this Sunday. After warming up with Orangetheory Fitness and exploring the many partnering nonprofits and advocates in the Hope Village, participants will march 2.2 miles through Balboa Park.
