Dr. John Lamberti was presented the Heart Ignite Award at American Heart Association’s 2015 San Diego Heart Ball. Jerry Sanders was also recognized as the 2015 American Heart Association Donald P. Shiley Innovation Award recipient. The Heart Ball was held on May 4 at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel and was chaired by Gary and Stacy Cady. $250,000 was raised during the “raise your paddle” portion of the evening. The event was sponsored by Torrey Pines Bank and Bill Howe Plumbing. All funds raised support research which has yielded numerous discoveries, including CPR.

Casa de Amparo held its 19th Meet the Chefs event on Apr. 26 at the Hilton San Diego/Del Mar. The event raised $125,000 to benefit Casa de Amparo’s programs that treat and prevent child abuse and neglect throughout San Diego County. Guests sampled food from 15 premier restaurants and chefs. Signature Chef spnsors incuded Datron, Directed Electronics, DJO Global, Grant General Contractors, San Diego Chargers and Union Bank – The Private Bank.
The 15th Annual “Superheroes for Youth” Celebrity Waiter Luncheon raised $165,000 for STAR/PAL youth programs. Dan Spinazzola was honored with the Superhero for Youth Award and Ron Fowler was recognized as Honorary Chair. The event was held at the Jo and Vi Jacobs Center and was sponsored by Corrections Corporation of America, US Bank, Sycuan, San Diego Chargers, Jack in the Box and San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union.

Experience of a Lifetime Gala, a benefit for Serving Seniors, was held on May 7 at the Del Mar Country Club. Sponsored by Sempra and SDG&E, the event raised $460,000. Deborah Szekely, founder of The Golden Door was honored at a reception honoring seniors who had touched the lives of the event guests and sponsors. “Funds raised will continue Serving Seniors’ one-to-one connection with all seniors who walk through our doors and ensure they have a hot meal waiting for them,” said Paul Downey, CEO and president, Serving Seniors.

Women Give San Diego’s 5th Anniversary Grants Celebration was held on May 13. Four community programs received grants totaling $100,000. The recipients were: Dreams for Change; International Rescue Committee; Leap to Success and North County Lifeline. Founded in 2010, WGSD envisions sustainable economic self-sufficiency and security for women and girls in San Diego County. Since its beginning, the organization has granted $490,000 to 13 non-profits.
Episcopal Community Services held its Water to Wine Gala on Apr. 25 at Liberty Station. The Gala raised $75,000 to support ECS programs which include Head Start which helps children five and under; Para Las Familias program to help children recover from trauma; and Friend to Friend and Safe Havens programs helping homeless. Sponsors included Barney&Barney, HechtSolberg and Neighborhood Housing Association.
Project Concern International hosted its annual Walk for Water 5K at Tecolote Shores on Apr. 19. Participants walked 5 kilometers carrying buckets of water to experience the journey women and children around the world to provide clean water for their families. The $100,000 raised will support PCI’s water and sanitation programs and efforts to end poverty worldwide.

Mama’s Day 2015 presented by Nordstrom and sponsored by Sycuan Casino, was held on May 8 at Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. Chefs from 55 restaurants were featured along with Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien as the event’s culinary host. The $176,500 raised will provide 57,680 home delivered meals for Mama’s Kitchen’s clients to men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer throughout San Diego County.
