Under the Dome – Central Library
“Celebration Under the Dome” raised $500,000 to support innovative technology and programming at all 36 San Diego Public Library locations. The San Diego Public Library Foundation sponsored the one-year anniversary of the opening of the Central Library on Oct. 10. The Title Sponsor was Qualcomm and other sponsors included the Audrey S. Geisel/Dr. Seuss Fund at the San Diego Foundation, the Shiley Foundation and the Mandell Weiss Charitable Trust. A date of Oct. 3 has been set for next year’s Celebration Under the Dome”.
The International Air & Space Hall of Fame Legends of Flight was held on Nov. 1 at the Air & Space Museum. Presenting Sponsors were Boeing and the Wolk Law Firm, Air Law. The Class of 2014 are some of the world’s most significant aviation pilots, crew members, visionaries, inventors and aerospace engineers. They highlight the importance of technology and innovation.

Feeding America San Diego held its Third Annual Sunset Soiree` on October 11 at the Del Mar Paddock and Turf Club. The event, presented by Gwendolyn Sontheim Meyer, raised $426,000. All proceeds will directly benefit FASD and its critical hunger-relief and nutrition programs. Currently, 450,000 San Diego residents are impacted by hunger and this $426,000 equals 2.5 million meals for San Diegans. FASD’s programs feed 480,000 children, families and seniors each year. A highlight of the evening was a concert by rock band Chicago.
San Diego Social Venture Partners announced the eight San Diego nonprofit finalists selected for the 3rd Annual “Advance San Diego” event. The finalists competed for $87,500 in cash and services. The event was held on Oct. 8 to showcase what the semi-finalists have learned in order to communicate the innovative ways they would improve and transform the lives of San Diegans. First Place winners were: Military and their Families completion; Support the Enlisted Project, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math); The Kid’s College, Youth and the Arts; The Mainly Mozart and Musicians for Education, Audience Choice Award; Support the Enlisted Project. Advance San Diego 2014 sponsors included Cox Communications, Moxie Foundation and Rancho Santa Fe Foundation’s Patriots Initiative.

Sasha and Chris Varone are the winners of the Sukkot at the Ranch Design Competion sponsored by the Leichtag Foundation. The Design completion invited members of the community to reimagine the ancient structure known as a sukkah, which is built during the Jewish harvest of Sukkot since biblical times. The varones were awarded $3,600 from the The Leichtag Foundation.
Higgs Fletcher & Mack, PRIMA Cinema and Modern Home Systems donated $3,000 to Rady Children’s Hospital. The check was presented in conjunction with complimentary showings of the newly released “Boxtrolls” for patients and families at RCH. Higgs Fletcher & Mack also made a $3,000 donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities San Diego. Employees of Higgs also volunteered at RMHCSD by serving meals and providing entertainment. These contributions are part of Higgs’s “7,500-Hour Volunteer Challenge” campaign as part of their 75th Anniversary celebration whereby members of the firm will donate 7,500 hours of community service along with monetary contributions throughout the year.

A Celebration of Courage and Hope was held on Sept. 23 at the US Grant Hotel to recognize individuals facing Alzheimer’s disease or those who have worked to support the effort to raise awareness and find a cure. A total of $200,000 was raised. Sponsors for the event included Darlene Shiley, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, One Reverse Mortgage, SDG&E Sempra, Scripps Health and Torrey Pines Bank.
Urban Corps of San Diego County commemorated its 25th anniversary on Oct. 16 with a celebratory “Sunset on the Bay’ event at the Bali Hai Restaurant. The nonprofit conservation corps provides a high school education and green job training to young adults. At the event AT&T San Diego presented a $25,000 Aspire grant donation. Aspire is focused on helping more students graduate high school ready for college and careers.
