Serving Seniors Raises $325,000

Serving Seniors hosted the fourth annual “Experience of a Lifetime: Uncork Your Support” on Apr. 7 at the Kona Kai Resort. The event raised $325,000. This amount makes it possible to provide 2,200 nutritious meals daily at 10 dining sites and to home-bound seniors throughout San Diego County and is equal to 130,000 meals. Sempra Energy/SDG&E was the California Sponsor, Darlene V. Shiley was the Napa Valley Sponsor, and Qualcomm and US Bank were Baja Sponsors.

Academy Award-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss was honored as the National Peacemaker Honoree at National Conflict Resolution Center’s 28th Annual Peacemaker Awards Dinner on Apr. 14 the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. Through the Dreyfuss Civics Initiative, he aims to revive the teaching of civics in American public education to empower future generations with the critical-thinking skills they need to fulfill the vast potential of American citizenship.

Money raised at this event will help support NCRC’s groundbreaking initiative, Avoiding the Pipeline to Prison, which aims to keep at-risk youth in schools and out of the juvenile justice system.

Workshops for Warriors received a $250,000 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation. The donation will help offset training and provide Workshops for Warriors’ machining students with stipends while they work to complete their certifications. The Gene Haas Foundation was created in 1999 by Gene Haas, Founder of Haas Automation. The foundation provides scholarships for students entering technical training programs.

The San Diego Police Foundation’s 6th Annual Women in Blue Luncheon was held on Mar. 30 at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel. Presenting Sponsor ESET awarded the Woman in Cybersecurity Scholarship and Wells Fargo presented the Rita Olson Legacy Scholarship. The $70,000 raised will support the Foundation’s mission to fund equipment, training and outreach programs for SDPD. The 2016 Honorees were Detective Tammy Clendenen; Beverly Harris; and Officer Suzy de la Pena.

Junior Seau Foundation Check Presentation

Junior Seau Foundation Check Presentation

The Junior Seau Foundation presented a $250,000 check to the Challenged Athletes Foundation to launch the Junior Seau Foundation Adaptive Surf Program, presented by CAF. The funds will purchase surfboards, waveskis, beach wheelchairs, gear and a custom trailer for equipment. It will also provide coaching and travel grants for challenged athlete kids to participate in multiple annual kid’s surf clinics and camps per year. The goal of the Junior Seau Foundation Adaptive Surf Program is to serve as a catalyst for growth of global adaptive surfing.

The YWCA In the Company of Women is being held on Apr. 29 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt with Anna Deavere Smith, Playwright, actor and professor as the Keynote Speaker. The event includes TWIN, Tribute to Women & Industry Awards, recognizing the strength, courage, and extraordinary achievenemts of professional women in San Diego. Funds raised will support victims of domestic violence for women and children.

Higgs Fletcher & Mack has awarded its fourth $4,500 California Western School of Law Diversity Scholarship to Beshoy F Shehata. He was selected for demonstrating ethical and civic leadership and for providing services to underrepresented groups in the community. “At Higgs, we have a commitment to education and promoting diversity throughout the legal community. The firm has always been a trailblazer in diversity efforts and Beshoy is more than deserving of this award,” said Rahil Swigart, member of the Higgs Fletcher & Mack Diversity Committee and California Western School of Law alum.

The Cambridge School held its 10th annual Auction & Gala themed “Under Full Sail” on Mar. 19. The event, held at the Carlsbad Sheraton, raised $125,000 to support professional development programs for teachers as well as financial aid for those families who need assistance.
