On Dec. 7 GRACED BY GRIT held a reception to introduce The Chelsea Legging which was inspired by Chelsea King, a San Diego teen whose life was taken while out for a run. A total of $7,000 was raised for Chelsea’s Light Foundation, whose mission is to increase awareness, engagement, prevention and pass legislation to protect children from Child Sexual Assault. Former California State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher who crafted the bill for Chelsea’s Law, was featured speaker.
Thirty-one organizations have been selected to receive funds raised by Las Patronas from two different Jewel Balls: 10 major beneficiaries from funds raised at the upcoming 71st Jewel Ball and 21 minor beneficiaries from funds raised during the 70th Jewel Ball. Among those receiving $20,000 or more funded from proceeds of the 2017 Jewel Ball include: A Reason to Survive; Center for Community Solutions; and La Jolla Playhouse. Las Patronas is introducing its first Legacy Society Grant recipient. The recipient is Big Sister League, Inc.

Mission Federal Credit Union employees delivered and donated 12 holiday trees to the San Diego Center for Children. Ten holiday trees went to the residential cottages on the Center’s main campus in Kearny Mesa and two other trees were delivered to program sites in La Mesa and South Bay. “Mission Fed is excited to be part of the SDCFC team this holiday season,” said Angie Lasagna, Vice President of Community Relations for Mission Fed.

On Dec. 22 The Emilio Nares Foundation dedicated the first, permanent childhood cancer Survivor Bell for the hospital’s oncology inpatient unit, where sick children endure cancer treatment for days, weeks and sometimes months or years. Six year old patient Eliana Feliciano-Tupou was the hospital’s first survivor to ring the new Survivor Bell during a dedication ceremony.

CU and iHeartMedia recognized “Classroom Heroes” throughout 2016. Winning teachers were selected to receive a $500 SDCC Visa gift card. Lauren Shepherd of Arroyo Vista Charter School in Chula Vista was recognized through SDCCU Classroom Heroes. She was recognized for her commitment to students, education and the community.
St. Germaine Children’s Charity hosted its 33rd Annual Silver Tea on Dec. 13. The event was held at the estate of David McDonough in La Jolla. The $100,000 raised will be donated in June 2017 to Child Abuse Prevention Programs selected as St. Germaine’s Grant Recipients. Jane Nobbs and Taunya and Don Daley made substantial contributions to the Tea. Giuseppe Restaurants & Fine Catering and Extraordinary Desserts were contributors.
California Coast Credit Union partnered with the San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego Unaccompanied Youth Task Force to launch the Warm Their Soles sock drive to collect new socks for youth experiencing homelessness in San Diego County. The drive which began in November, raised 23,245 pair or socks. Cal Coast matched the first $5,000 in donations. Socks collected were distributed to Monarch School, Stand Up 4 Kids San Diego, Home Start and the Center in Hillcrest.
The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA is holding its 32nd tribute on Jan. 13 at the Town & Country Hotel. The Human Dignity Award will be presented to an individual or group who have demonstrated extraordinary achievement and commitment to promoting the value and importance defined by the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
ElderHelp’s Holiday Angels delivered poinsettias and gift cards to 300 isolated seniors on Dec. 3. This is the 13th year of partnership with UPS. Other sponsors included Hill Compliance Advisors, Lowes Home Improvement Stores, 2-1-1 and PAWS San Diego. Wawnesa, Intuit and Oggi’s provided gift card donations and support.
