On June 22, Feeding San Diego received a $75,000 grant from the Morgan Stanley Foundation. The money will be used to fund its School Pantry Program, a child hunger initiative that helps ensure low-income families have a readily accessible source of healthy and nutritious food to prepare at home. “We are thrilled to receive this important grant from the Morgan Stanley Foundation in support of our efforts to deliver more nutritious meals to children and families in San Diego,” said Vince Hall, CEO of Feeding San Diego. “Morgan Stanley and its employees provide vital support for Feeding San Diego by generous contributions like this and many hours volunteering.”
The 5th annual 5K Walk for Sobriety was held on June 17 and raised $68,700. The proceeds benefit McAlister Institute. The walk honored the institute’s 40 years of helping individuals and families impacted by addiction with services such as substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, life skills education, and vocational training to individuals who could not otherwise afford help.
On June 29, San Diego Humane Society raised $335,000 at its second annual Day of Giving. A total of 61 animals also found homes during a special adoption fee-waived adoption promotion. A Puppy Play Yard, sponsored by Purina, was available at SDHS’s campus locations.

Sharp HealthCare Foundation is celebrating another $100,000 contribution from the French Fund in support of the Child and Adolescent Unit at Sharp Mesa Vista remodel efforts. With this gift, the Foundation is already 25 percent towards the goal of the challenge grant of $415,000 set forth by Price Philanthropies. In addition to maximizing available space for patient care, the project will create an improved healing environment for patients, where soothing colors and images of nature will combine to create a home-like atmosphere – all with the latest patient safety features available. The remodel project will begin in August 2017 and is expected to be completed within six months.
Mama’s Kitchen was honored as a “Nonprofit of the Year” at a celebration for California Nonprofits Day at the state capitol in Sacramento on June 28. They were recognized for their commitment to preparing and delivering three nutrition-specific meals a day to men, women, and children affected by AIDS or cancer throughout San Diego County. During the past 27 years, the organization has served 8 million meals.
The 29th Annual Business Hall of Fame, Junior Achievement’s signature event, has announced the 2017 laureates. Those being honored are Janice Brown, Jack McGrory, Wendy Gillespie, and Lori and Bill Walton. They are recognized for their impact, integrity, leadership, and legacy of service. They are also outstanding role models for San Diego’s youth. The awards will be presented on November 2 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar.

Second Chance has received $201,800 for their job readiness programs, including a $41,800 grant from Supervisor Greg Cox. The organization transitions those that have spent time in the prison system. The S. Mark Taper Foundation awarded a two-year $100,000 grant. Other contributions include $20,000 from the Hervey Family Fund, $15,000 from Union Bank, $15,000 from LPL Financial, and $10,000 from the City of San Diego, Community Projects, Programs & Services. These awards help men and women rehabilitate and prepare them for the necessary skills to be successful in the workforce.
The 9th annual Phil’s Big BBQ is being held on July 30 at Petco Park. Proceeds will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters’ military mentoring program, Operation Bigs. Sponsors are Phil’s BBQ San Diego and San Diego Padres. Others sponsors include Torrey Pines Bank, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper, Hubert’s Lemonade, and Karl Strauss Brewing Company.
