Barrio Logan College Institute held Opportunity for Impact on May 12 to celebrate 20 years of supporting the Barrio Logan community. The event was held at the San Diego Central Library and raised $427,000 to support children who are in the BLCI program, as well as enable future students to fulfill their aspirations of a higher education. SDGE was the Signature Sponsor and Event Sponsors included Southwest Airlines, ManPower, Sycuan, The San Diego Foundation, Kaiser Permanente and Barney&Barney. BLCI students shared their stories of empowerment and strength as a result of their experience at BLCI.

Nhu Tran, Community Relations Manager of SDG&E, presented a $2,500 check to The Notables of San Diego Symphony which will support The Best & The Brightest Side by Side Concert sponsored by The Notables. The SDG&E contribution completed the $50,000 fundraiser, Wine & Wears, needed for The Notables sponsorship of this educational program. Co-chair Joyce Glazer and Symphony Executive Todd Schultz received the check at Notables luncheon on June 16.

Junior Achievement of San Diego students have been selected to compete at the National Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. The students represent San Dieguito High School Academy in Encinitas and founded MyKikback.com, an online event-planning website that simplifies the party-planning experience. The students traveled to D.C. to compete with teen entrepreneurs from across the United States.
The American Diabetes Association’s San Diego office honored three fathers with the 2016 Father of the Year Awards. The awards were presented to Jeffrey Martin, San Diego Gas & Electric; Tracy Sundlun, Competitor Group; and Tum Vongsawad, San Diego County Credit Union at the 13th annual dinner on June 16. The program honors fathers who have demonstrated the ability to balance their personal lives, serve as role models of strength, commitment and love for their children and help make positive contributions to their families and communities.The ADA event raised $200,000 in donations for diabetes research and programs and services for people with diabetes.
On June 9, Harrah’s hosted its second All-In 4 Change awards luncheon, awarding $100,000 in grants to non-profit organizations. The program aims to make San Diego a healthier and more vibrant place to live and work. Those receiving grants included $10,000 T.E.R.I., Inc; $5,000 to San Diego Blood Bank; $4,000 to USO Council of San Diego; and $3,000 Honorable Mention Grants to Armed Services YMCA; Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank; and Meals on Wheels of Greater San Diego.
The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation’s Jacobs Presents Performing Arts and Cultural Experiences series concluded its 2015-2016 season with Poets & Painters on June 25. The festival was held at the Market Creek Amphitheater. Poets & Painters highlighted local and national artists. The festival was funded in part by an Arts Works award for $25,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts.
UC San Diego received a $2.5 million grant from the Hellman Fellows Fund to support junior faculty in launching their careers on the tenure track. The Hellman Fellows Program has served as a model to expand the fellowships to all campuses in the UC system, and it is the only privately funded program established at all 10 institutions.

On June 16 the San Diego Rescue Mission received 300 new mattresses from Leesa Sleep. The mattresses are used in the Mission’s emergency shelters, Men’s recovery programs, Recuperate Care Unit, and Transitional programs and are valued at $60,000. “These mattresses will make a difference in the lives of the people who come through our doors seeking recovery, comfort and hope,” said Herb Johnson, President and CEO of San Diego Rescue Mission.
