On Jan. 24, Padres Pedal the Cause presented a check for the record-breaking $2.9 million raised at the November event to Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and Rady Children’s Hospital. Over the past six years, Padres Pedal the Cause’s support for local cancer research agencies has topped $10 million.
“It’s inspiring to see the impact of the Padres Pedal community in San Diego, raising over $10 million to accelerate cures, with 100 percent of those funds staying local to fund the region’s top cancer research and treatment centers,” said Padres Pedal the Cause Executive Director Anne Marbarger. “Cancer affects every one of us in some way, and we are proud to invest in local research.”

More than 200 guests wined, dined, and donated at St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center’s Tea by the Sea Jan 19. The event at the elegant Marine Room in La Jolla brought in over $19,000 for SMSC’s art program.
Through its art program, El Cajon-based SMSC helps adults with developmental disabilities express themselves and get in touch with their creative sides.

Scientist Paul Negulescu, senior vice president at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, has donated his recently earned $125,000 Warren Alpert Foundation research prize to the ALS Association Greater San Diego Chapter. Negulescu chose the ALS Association to honor friend and colleague, Peter Grootenhuis, who is living with ALS.
The Warren Alpert Foundation recognized Negulescu’s discoveries that paved the way for precision-targeted treatments for cystic fibrosis, along with the achievements of four other scientists from around the world.
“Our work in CF has been a team effort that began with support from patients and their families. Peter led the CF project for many years, and continues to make remarkable contributions as a leader, scientist, mentor, and friend,” said Negulescu. “It seemed appropriate to donate the prize money to a worthy organization that is helping him and others.”

Local nonprofit Options for All receives a $19,595 grant for its Film & Media Studio
Options for All, which aims to empower those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, recently got a $19,595 boost from local philanthropic organization Las Patronas to purchase equipment for its Film & Media Studio. The aspiring filmmakers of the Film & Media Studio build creative and practical skills over the course of the program and upon completion, work with an employment specialist to find a job in the film and media industry.
“Options For All is making a meaningful difference in our community through the Film & Media Studio and we are honored to support this organization with a grant,” said Las Patronas President Michelle Wiseman.
