The Ronald McDonald House San Diego held its annual ROMP on Oct. 5 at a private home in Rancho Santa Fe. A Night at the Copacabana raised $690,000 to help support families with critically ill or injured children during their child’s hospitalization. The funds allow RMDHSD to offer lodging, meals and other supportive services. The event featured Emmy-nominated choreographer, dancer and recording artist Mark Ballas. Auction item featuring starting line of the Indianapolis 500 with suite tickets and pit passes, sold for $60,000. A 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA , sponsored by Hoehn Motors, was offered as a raffle item and won by Clare Delahanty of San Diego. She has the choice between the luxury car or $30,000.

The Second Annual Sunset Soiree sponsored by Feeding America San Diego was held on Sept. 28 at the Del Mar Paddock and Turf Club. The event was totally underwritten by Gwendolyn Meyer and netted $521,000. This amount of money will provide 87,000 meals for San Diegans struggling with hunger. Grammy-award winning singer/songwriter Bonnie Raitte performed.

University of San Diego Founders’ Gala is being held on Nov. 2. Unforgettable Night is being held at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, University of San Diego. Proceeds will support student scholars. Cox is the Legacy Sponsor and Heritage Sponsors include Shiley Foundation, Bartell Hotels and Coca Cola.
Middle School Thomas Starr King was the recipient of a $5,000 Barona Education Grant. Assemblyman Mike Gatto sponsored the grant application which the school will use to purchase 12 iPad Minis and eBooks to benefit students. Since 2006, the Barona Band of Mission Indians has awarded $2 million to help bridge school budget gaps and share resources through its Barona Education Grant Program.

The Challenge Center in La Mesa raised $200,000 at its 16th annual Comedy Night Gala held at the Allen Airways Flying Museum at Gillespie Field in El Cajon on Sept. 21. The fundraiser featured a performance by comedienne and actress Vicki Lawrence. Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund that subsidizes physical therapy expenses for low-income individuals. Honorary chairs for the evening were Julie and Tom Karlo of KPBS and Bill and Claudia Allen of the Allen Airways Flying Museum. Ed Burr, president/CEO and founder of Edco Disposal Corp. was recognized at the event.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and as part of its ongoing commitment to cultural diversity and responsible banking, Union Bank has joined with KPBS to honor two San Diegans as local heroes. The 2013 Hispanic Heritage Month honorees are: Fabiola A. Navarro, immigration attorney for the Employee Rights Center (ERC); and Andrea Skorepa, president and chief executive officer of Casa Familiar. Both will be recognized with other heritage month honorees during a November celebration in San Diego. The honorees share a passion and a commitment to their communities to provide them with resources to succeed in today’s world.

Voices for Children has received a $25,000 grant from The Parker Foundation to help fund Advocate University. Awarded as part of VFC’s capacity-building initiative, the grant aids in preparing approximately 600 new volunteers to advocate for San Diego County’s most vulnerable foster youth.
Former First Lady Laura Bush was the Keynote Speaker at An Evening to Remember, a fundraiser for Solutions For Change. The event was held on Sept. 21 at the La Costa Resort and Spa. Net proceeds of $1.25 million will support programs and initiatives to permanently solve family homelessness. Sponsors included Taylor Made Golf Company, Issa Family Foundation, Datron and Forte For Children. Mark King, President and CEO of TaylorMade Golf Company and Chairman of the Community Leadership Team for Solutions for Change remarked, “I have been part of this organization for several years and have seen first-hand how these programs solve family homelessness—not temporarily, but permanently.”
