San Diego-based Petco and the Padres celebrated 10 years of community partnership during Anniversary Weekend May 9-11. For the past decade, Petco Park has served not only as home to the San Diego Padres but also as a catalyst for the revitalization of San Diego’s East Village. As part of the weekend celebration, the Petco Foundation presented a $10,000 check to the San Diego Humane Society during the Sunday’s pre-game ceremony. ” It’s been a great 10 years and we’re looking forward to becoming even stronger community partners as we embark on the next 10 plus together,” said Mike Dee, Padres President and CEO.

“The Main Event”, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Soujthwest’s 51st Anniversary Dinner was held on May 8 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront with over 1,300 supporters in attendance. Ellen and David Dolgen were co-chairs for the event which raised $1.1 million to ensure and protect the rights for all women and men in our community to have access to cervical cancer screening, critical LEEP procedures, HPV vaccine and other services. Speaker of the California State Assembly Toni Atkins was recognized for her leadership for the fight for women’s health. Board Chair Elaine Hanson and her family gave a $51,000 matching gift to kick off the Gift Challenge.
The Salk Institute received a $3 million gift from the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research to support the research of the Glenn Center for Aging Research at the Salk Institute, which was established in 2009, with a $5 million gift from the Glenn Foundation. “The biology of aging underlies all the major human diseases,” Glenn Foundation President Mark Collins says. “To understand the fundamental aging process and to intervene is to delay the onset of disease, to extend the healthful years of life and reduce costs to society.”
Mission Federal Artwalk 30th annual Little Italy was held on Apr. 26-27. Mission Federal ArtWalk was the Title Sponsor and Cymer was the Premier Sponsor. The Westgate Hotel was the Official Hotel Sponsor. Other sponsors included Ballast Point, Broadstone Little Italy, Cox Communications, Custom Logos, Scripps Health and Whole Foods. Artwork sold and commissioned totaled over $1 million.
Muffy Walker, Co-Founder of International Bipolar Foundation was awarded the Hope Award for Public Education. The awards recognize individuals who have shown extraordinary tenacity and courage in battling serious mental illness and are living full lives and pursuing their goals. Walker’s son was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at seven. She started a support group out of her home for other family members on the same journey, now the International Bipolar Foundation. The 2014 honorees were recognized for their achievements at the Awards of Excellence celebration in Washington, DC on May 6.
A Fair Way Mediation Center received the 2014 San Diego Award in the Mediation & Arbitration Services category by the San Diego Award Program. Winners of the awards are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the San Diego Award Program and date provided by third parties. The New Children’s Museum and Whole Foods Market kicked-off their year-long partnership with a $18,694 check to the Museum which will help fund monthly toddler programming and a new parent/child cooking series. Whole Foods Market’s San Diego store and its shopper community raised the funds through its 5% day, donating 5% of its after tax profits from the day’s sales to the Museum.

Tri-City Hospital Foundation’s third annual Fashion That Heals event was held on May 17 at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa. A fashion show starring TCMC doctors and employees was presented and an opportunity drawing called “Pick a Purse” was a feature of the event which raised $105,000 for women’s cardiac health services at TCMC. NRG was the runway sponsor and San Diego Imaging was the designer sponsor.
