This month, The Old Globe is staging the world premiere musical of Almost Famous, based on writer-director Cameron Crowe’s iconic film that earned him an Oscar for best screenplay and made Kate Hudson a star.
Set in 1973, the story follows a 15-year-old aspiring music journalist who gets a dream assignment from Rolling Stone and winds up on tour with a rising rock band. In real life, Crowe, a San Diego native, was just 14 when he talked his way backstage at the San Diego Sports Arena and interviewed Black Sabbath.
For the stage reboot, the powerhouse creative team includes Pulitzer Prize and two-time Tony Award winner Tom Kitt (composer of Next to Normal and If/Then) and Tony Award nominee Jeremy Herrin (director of Noises Off and Wolf Hall). So far, the producers have been mum on the details, but we know the score will be a mix of classics, songs from the original soundtrack, and new tunes.
And with Crowe at the helm, the script is sure to be whip-smart and funny. Rock on!
