Every time I visit the bizarre idyllic Smallville island that is Coronado, I’m glad I did. A magical, if a touch Stepfordian, place that is. Tim Kolanko is a great reason to visit. One of the city’s top chefs, he’s usually a little too busy behind the scenes building the Leroy’s Kitchen & Lounge group a little mini empire. But for this dinner he’s back in the kitchen with chefs Gregory Chavez (Wine Vault & Bistro) and Leroy’s chef de cuisine, Ronnie Schwandt. It’s a four-course seafood special with wines curated by Patrick Bellow (of Revel and Vance Erickson portfolios). Expect chilled asparagus soup with spot prawns, black cod with sunchoke puree in a bacon vinaigrette, wild king salmon with green garlic/farrow/crispy mushrooms.

No, we cannot escape bacon. We should just submit to its charms and let it colonize us. A good way to start that process is this massive fest dedicated to the magical meat stick and barrel-aged treats (beer, bourbon, Scotch, etc.). Over 140 food and drink booths (including some of Santa Barbara’s top wineries) will dish out bacon creations and Top Chef alum Brooke Williamson will act as the grand poobah of pig. (Williamson will also cook an all-bacon dinner the night before with beer and bourbon pairings by Stone Brewing’s “Dr.” Bill Sysak).
