Dr. Gary Weitzman
As a national leader in animal welfare, Dr. Gary Weitzman inspires compassion every day. He has been president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) since 2012, served as board chair for the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, and is a current board member for California Animal Welfare Association, Shelter Animals Count, and Project Chimps.
Dr. Weitzman’s leadership at SDHS has been instrumental to ensuring San Diego stays at zero euthanasia of healthy or treatable shelter animals. Thanks to his vision, the organization has developed innovative programs and facilities that serve as a model for shelters nationwide—including shelter medicine, behavior and training, kitten and foster programs, and wildlife rehabilitation. Dr. Weitzman is also the author of nine books published by National Geographic that support pet families in caring for their beloved animals.
