His horse Evita Argentina won the A Gleam Handicap (Grade 2) at Hollywood Park in July 2009—the first 3-year-old to win the race since Honeymoon in 1946. She also won the 2008 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar.

Bio: Klein was named North America’s leading Thoroughbred owner by the Associated Press in 1989. Three times—1985, 1986, and 1987—he received the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Owner. He owned the filly Winning Colors, the 1988 Kentucky Derby winner, and owned the Del Rayo Racing Stables in Rancho Santa Fe. He entered the Thoroughbred business in 1982, and sold all 114 of his horses in 1989 for $29.6 million. Klein also owned the NFL’s San Diego Chargers for 18 years. He died on March 12, 1990.

Bio: The couple bought their first two horses at the Del Mar Yearling Sale for $6,000 in 1957. They went on to establish the 568-acre Golden Eagle Farm in Ramona, which featured 800 horses at its peak in the early 2000s. John was a founder of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and its chairman for several decades. Betty served as one of the club’s directors from 2002 to 2008. Their most successful horse was Best Pal, who earned $5.6 million in a six-year span. Best Pal won the 1990 Del Mar Futurity and the 1991 Pacific Classic and finished second at the 1991 Kentucky Derby. The Mabees won Eclipse Awards for breeding in 1991, 1997, and 1998. John died at age 80 on April 24, 2002. Betty passed away at age 88 on February 15, 2010.
Bio: Paulson was a resident of Del Mar. His horse Theatrical won the Turf race at the 1987 Breeders’ Cup. The weekend of the race was dramatic: According to the New York Times, “Paulson bought out Bert Firestone’s 25 percent interest in the 5-year-old son of Nureyev only 24 hours before post time after the two owners had a dispute over whose colors Theatrical would carry.” His horse Cigar won 16 consecutive races from 1994 to 1996 and was twice named Horse of the Year. Paulson died at age 78 on July 19, 2000.
Bio: Pegram grew up in southern Indiana and developed his interest in horse racing by attending Ellis Park in Kentucky. He went to his first Kentucky Derby in 1979 at age 26.
Pegram purchased Real Quiet, the 1998 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, for $17,000 as a yearling. Victory Gallop beat Real Quiet by a nose at the 1998 Belmont to prevent a Triple Crown victory. Real Quiet died in 2010.
Pegram’s Silverbulletday, who won Eclipse Awards in 1998 (2-Year-Old Filly) and 1999 (3-Year-Old Filly), was enshrined in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. He also owned Captain Steve, who won the $6-million Dubai World Cup in 2001.
Pegram’s Lookin at Lucky won the 2010 Preakness Stakes by three-quarters of a length. The colt took second at the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Tapwrit, who finished sixth at the Kentucky Derby, was the third Kentucky Derby starter for Wellman. He bought an interest in 2016’s Destin and campaigned 2014’s Danza, who finished third.

After Covid, I’m still a little squeamish about hitting a buffet with a hundred sneezing strangers, but I’m definitely ready for the resurgence of kamayan Thursday nights at National City’s Villa Manila (which is, naturally, in a strip mall). Kayaman, a precolonial Filipino method of eating with your hands, “is a great experience because it promotes community and togetherness,” says James Camanyag, PR marketing director at Villa Manila. Large banana leaves line the table, upon which communal dishes are dumped and devoured without utensils or pretension. It’s not a public buffet—just a way to eat favorites like adobo, daing na bangus (fried milkfish),
lumpia, lechon kawali (pork belly), and more with friends and family. I like to make small rice balls with my right hand, add a bite of tender meat to it with my left, nom, and repeat. That’s the beauty of kamayan: there’s no wrong way to dig in.
Understandably, the practice took a significant hit during the pandemic, but that’s not the first time kamayan has come under attack. “The practice was tolerated during the Spanish period, but it was suppressed during the American Colonial Period when American dining etiquette and the use of spoons and
forks were aggressively promoted,” explains Camanyag. Today, Villa Manila’s kamayan experience is the only one in San Diego that’s regularly available with a reservation. The food is always amazing, but there’s just something about eating with your hands that makes it taste that much better.
Camanyag says first-timers are always welcome, recommending dishes like the spicy bicol express (stewed pork in coconut milk and shrimp paste with jalapeno), kare-kare (a thick peanut stew cooked with oxtail, tripe, beef shank, and more), Shanghai lumpia (Chinese- Filipino fusion pork egg rolls), or the “Sizzling Sisig” (crunchy pork belly and pork ears served on a sizzling plate, fajita-style). Ask most people what UC San Diego is known for, and the arts may not be the first answer. Yet this fall, San Diegans can watch Ghostbusters with a live orchestra, try their hand at glassmaking and wander among more than 20 works of public art woven throughout the university’s La Jolla campus.
ArtsConnect brings those experiences into view, helping residents discover what they can see, hear and create at UC San Diego while experiencing the campus in a new way.

“The arts are at the heart of UC San Diego’s student-centered mission and vision,” says Alysson Satterlund, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life. “Whether creating, participating in, or experiencing performances, the arts are essential to a healthy and truly fun Triton student experience.”
That invitation often begins where the arts intersect with other fields.
“Some of the most innovative work and discovery happen where disciplines don’t usually share a stage,” says Cristina Della Coletta, Dean of the UC San Diego School of Arts and Humanities. “So through our unique intersection of the arts with science, technology, and medicine, we are improving lives, physically and emotionally.
Take The Inaudible Ocean, a collaboration between Department of Music Professor Lei Liang and Scripps Institution of Oceanography Assistant Project Scientist Josh Jones. Over eight years, the pair recorded earthquakes, ship noise, whale songs and other sounds in remote underwater locations. They transformed those recordings into a live music experience that allowed audiences to hear the ocean in an entirely new way. The work premiered on campus in May and continues to evolve.
The arts also connect the campus to the global art world and diverse perspectives. Chief Campus Curator Jessica Berlanga Taylor recently curated the Mexico Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale, featuring RojoNegro, the collective formed by Noé Martínez and María Sosa. The collective will unveil a compelling new permanent installation for UC San Diego’s celebrated Stuart Collection later this fall.
ArtPower offers another easy entry point, bringing touring performers to venues including the outdoor Epstein Family Amphitheater and the intimate Loft. The nearly three dozen performances featured through its 2026-2027 season span music, dance, film, theater and conversation.
Among the fall highlights is Ghostbusters in Concert on Sept. 25, pairing the beloved 1984 film with a live performance of Elmer Bernstein’s score. Tickets start at $35, and the amphitheater is located next to the UC San Diego Blue Line trolley station.
“Every member of our community should have access to world-class art, so we work hard to remove the barriers that stand in the way,” says Colleen Kollar Smith, executive artistic director of the Campus Performances and Events Office. “That means affordable ticket prices, and performances, voices and experiences where people see themselves reflected on stage and know they belong.”
The arts at UC San Diego are not only something to watch. The Craft Center offers public classes and workshops in ceramics, jewelry, woodworking, culinary arts and even surfboard shaping.
