The public’s positive response to an art exhibition at the Panama–California International Exposition in 1915 inspired the launch of San Diego’s first permanent collection. The museum, opened in 1926, houses an outstanding collection of European old masters and 19th- and 20th-century American art, along with Asian, contemporary, and Latin American works. Exciting summer exhibitions include Divine Desire: Printmaking, Mythology, and the Birth of the Baroque, which showcases 16th-century works on the loves and entanglements of the gods (through June 30); Lalla Essaydi: Photographs, powerful images that explore the role of women in Arab culture (through August 4); and the vibrant Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, opening July 11.
