Tips from the trusted experts at Mauzy Cooling, Heating, Plumbing, and Electrical
San Diego summers can be brutal. But since the hottest period is typically late summer into early fall, San Diegans still have time to prepare. The pros at Mauzy Cooling, Heating, Plumbing, and Electrical are standing by to help homeowners fortify their homes against the elements and ensure their air conditioning is as frosty as the penguins that serve as the company’s mascots.
Many homeowners underestimate the load their AC system faces, especially in the inland valleys where temperatures regularly top 100 degrees. San Diego regularly sees multi-day heatwaves each summer, and a system that struggles on the first day will likely fail by the third. Longer run times, unusual sounds or smells, and uneven cooling from room to room are all signs that your system may not survive the next hot spell.
Systems typically last 12 to 17 years, but there are exceptions. If a system is approaching that, or is already there, a professional evaluation is recommended before summer really heats up. A good rule of thumb: If you can’t remember when your system was last serviced, it’s due.
“As technology changes, systems become smarter and smarter,” says Sean O’Connor, an install manager at Mauzy with 42 years of experience. “There are a lot of people out there who will say a system’s only good for 10 years. I don’t buy that—these systems are built to last as long as they’re taken care of.”
There are also a few steps homeowners can take between services to extend the life of their system. Regularly changing a dirty filter—especially if you have kids or pets—and keeping an outdoor unit clean can help head off problems in the future, says O’Connor.
Also, be realistic about whether it’s time to replace a unit. O’Connor likens pouring money into salvaging a faulty unit with patchwork repairs and replacement parts to “tripping over a dollar to pick up a dime.” When one part fails, others are sure to follow, and newer parts may not be compatible with older units. Mauzy recommends homeowners use the 50% rule: If a repair costs more than 50% of the system’s replacement value, and the equipment is over 10 years old, replacement is usually the better long-term value. And don’t forget the ducting. An older house that was built with heat and later had air conditioning added may not have sufficient airflow, regardless of how good the system is.
Last but not least, homeowners should know who to trust when it comes to their homes. Built on three generations of professional integrity, Mauzy has grown into not just a leader for cooling, heating, plumbing, and electrical services, but a leader in the community known for supporting local nonprofits across an array of causes. To ensure complete peace of mind, Mauzy stands behind a comprehensive 12-point guarantee that outlines its commitment to outstanding service, quality equipment, expert technicians who understand how the local microclimates affect HVAC performance, and no upsells or surprises on the bill.
“We go the extra mile. That’s what sets us apart,” O’Connor says. To get a free quote today, visit mauzy.com.

The San Diego home remodeling company works on full homes, kitchens, bathrooms, home additions, ADUs, garages, landscapes, and hardscapes.
Most homeowners want two things before they commit to a remodel: a realistic sense of cost and a clear picture of what the finished space will look like. Milan Design + Build helps deliver both through its online remodeling estimator and personalized design consultations, supported by a showroom experience and 3D renderings.
“The online estimate gives homeowners a starting number in about a minute, and the showroom and 3D renderings let them see materials and layouts before anything is built,” says David Noriani, CEO of Milan Design + Build. “Keeping design, permits, and construction with one team helps us manage expectations and keep everyone working toward the same vision.”

Modern design is a particular focus for Milan, with an emphasis on clean lines, natural light, functional layouts, and carefully selected materials. The team adapts each design to the homeowner’s lifestyle and the character of the property. Milan Design + Build combines thoughtful design with construction expertise, creating spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful.
The online estimator covers kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, full-home remodels, and ADU construction. At Milan’s showroom on Carroll Road, visitors can review real materials, finishes, and design options, meet the design-build team, and discuss project scope, budget, and timing. Consultations can also be held virtually for homeowners who prefer to start remotely.
At Milan Design + Build, one integrated team works on the entire project. Design and construction aren’t divided between separate firms. The process begins with a consultation and feasibility review, followed by design, space planning, and 3D renderings developed from detailed measurements and digital scans. The team also coordinates architectural plans, structural engineering, city approvals, and material selection, with construction overseen by a dedicated project manager.
Homeowners can explore their remodeling options, get an initial estimate, or request a design consultation at MilanBuild.com.

Johns Hopkins pain physician Dr. Anita Gupta, named a 2026 Health Pioneer finalist, on why women's pain is missed, and what modern care can do about it.
For too many women, pain becomes a long wait. Years of appointments. Symptoms explained away. A diagnosis that arrives, on average, seven years after the pain began. Dr. Anita Gupta has spent her career working to shorten that wait.
An anesthesiologist and pain medicine physician on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Gupta was named a San Diego Magazine 2026 Health Pioneer finalist and honored by the California State Assembly as a 2026 Distinguished Woman in Medicine. Her clinical focus is the conditions women are most often told to live with: pelvic pain, endometriosis-related pain, fibromyalgia, migraine, and chronic pain that follows childbirth or surgery.
The numbers explain why the work matters. Nearly one in four adults lives with chronic pain, and women carry a heavier share of its most disabling forms. Endometriosis affects up to fifteen percent of women of reproductive age, and it can take years to diagnose. Women spend about 25 percent more of their lives in poor health than men, much of it in pain that was never fully worked up.
Modern pain medicine offers more than it used to. Image-guided injections and nerve blocks can pinpoint and quiet specific pain generators. Neuromodulation can calm overactive pain pathways when medications fall short. New non-opioid therapies, including the first new fibromyalgia treatment approved in more than fifteen years, give physicians options that did not exist a decade ago. And multidisciplinary care, pairing medical treatment with pelvic floor physical therapy, behavioral health, and nutrition, treats the whole picture rather than a single symptom.
In September 2026, Oxford University Press published Interventional Pain Medicine for Women’s Health, the textbook Dr. Gupta edited to give clinicians a rigorous, source-based guide to diagnosing and treating women’s pain. Her message to patients is straightforward: pain that persists deserves a name, a workup, and a plan. If you have been told your pain is normal, a second opinion is not a complaint. It is good medicine.

Dr. Gupta writes and speaks nationally on women’s pain, and advises the health innovators working to change it. San Diego, home to one of the country’s great life sciences communities, is exactly the place to expect better answers.

When her son was born with ocular albinism, a rare genetic vision disorder, in 1989, doctors offered “no treatment, no cure, no hope.” She and husband Sam refused to accept this, founding the Vision of Children Foundation in 1991. “I was just a mom wondering what we could do to help our son live a normal life,” she recalls. “And Sam’s comment was: We’re going to fix this.” Today, Vision of Children is the world’s leading supporter of research into related genetic vision disorders, currently funding work at UC San Diego’s Shiley Eye Institute, the University of Pittsburgh, and Weill Cornell Medicine.

Dr. Jennifer Davis was a successful pediatrician in her mid-40s when she suddenly started feeling not like herself. Poor sleep, mood changes, fatigue, brain fog, and eventually hot flashes led her to realize she was in perimenopause. When she sought help, she found few local practices offering evidence-based, FDA-approved hormone therapy—and long waits to see those who did. Determined to help change that, she became certified by the Menopause Society and founded San Diego Menopause to provide women with the knowledgeable, compassionate care she had struggled to find.
At San Diego Menopause, Dr. Davis and nurse practitioner Taylor Stafford provide comprehensive, evidence-based care for perimenopause and menopause, including hormonal and non-hormonal treatments for symptoms including hot flashes, brain fog, sleep and mood changes, low libido and sexual health concerns. “Women deserve to be heard, believed, and taken seriously. I know firsthand how debilitating these symptoms can be,” Dr. Davis says. “Our mission is to empower women and give them their lives back.”

As President and CEO of Prosperity Now, Marisa Calderon believes prosperity means having the resources, stability, information, and opportunity to make real choices about your life and your family’s future. “That is what prosperity means to me: having enough room to choose,” Calderon says. “To decide what is right for you and what you want your life to become.”
Under her leadership, Prosperity Now turns that belief into practical solutions that help families claim money they have earned, buy homes, grow businesses, protect what they have built, and create opportunities for their children. Calderon’s approach starts with people’s real lives. Programs, policies, and partnerships matter when they make choices more possible and systems easier to navigate.
“Our job is to help people build the life they want,” she says. “That means making sure they have the resources and opportunities to choose what prosperity looks like for themselves and their families.”
