The legendary and tireless Deborah Szekely (pron. “ZAY-kay”), 92, is at it again. The local activist, philanthropist, and co-founder of Rancho La Puerta and Golden Door has brought back the New Americans Museum in NTC Liberty Station.
“Celebrating the contributions of America’s post-WWII immigrant communities through educational programming,” the institution will pursue projects of every kind—oral histories, essays competitions, art exhibitions, and more.
After a temporary closing in 2010, the museum reopens with an impressive roster. First up: the dual exhibition, narratives of resilience: reimagining homeland explores the experience of desplazados, or people forced into cities, often because of violence and poverty. One collection showcases extraordinary tapestries by residents of Bogota and an art installation by first-generation American Carolyn Castaño.
