If you follow Donut Bar on Facebook, chances are, your mornings unfold a bit like mine: shoring up enough willpower to not start the day with a box of deep-fried goodness. One morning they’re promoting their new peach pie doughnut, the next afternoon, they’re sharing pics of creme brulee doughnuts, glistening with torched sugar.
When the busy shop on B Street posted about another new addition — malted Belgian waffles — I’d reached the end of my restraint reserve. It was time to make the trek.
You’ve got a few choices for waffles: naked, but for a sprinkling of powered sugar or some whipped cream ($5), or more fully dressed options for $8, like strawberries, bananas and chocolate ganache (which mine, curiously, was missing) or Nutella, bananas, and nuts. There’s also the savory-meets-sweet bacon maple waffle, with bacon baked right into the batter.

Based on my taste-test, I’d advocate for one of the fruit-topped waffles. The waffle is tasty enough by itself, but adding fruit is necessary to really make it noteworthy, and even piled high with berries and drenched with syrup, it’s not so sweet that it’s overbearing.
If you find yourself torn between a waffle and a doughnut, there’s a third option: a waffle dipped in raspberry mango, chocolate fudge, or vanilla bean glaze, which, sadly, wasn’t available during my visit. Guess I’m going back. Damn you, Donut Bar, you got me again.
Donut Bar is located at 631 B Street in downtown San Diego (map). Waffles are served until 12 p.m. daily.
