Marvel at mastodons and multimillion-year-old marine mammal fossils—the San Diego Natural History Museum (theNAT) is a wondrous window into the natural world over time. Founded in 1874 by citizen scientists, the museum spotlights the evolution and diversity of Southern California and the peninsula of Baja California, Mexico, and remains active in research and expeditions in these regions. Permanent exhibitions include the brand-new Coast to Cactus in Southern California, a walk through this incredibly diverse place we call home, from the stunning Torrey Pines Reserve and estuaries to its animal-filled forests and sands of the Anza-Borrego Desert, along with Fossil Mysteries, which reveals prehistoric San Diego, and Skulls, a unique collection of real specimens.
