Phil’s BBQ and Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County raised $80,000 at the 8th annual Phil’s Big BBQ at Petco Park on Aug. 7. All of the proceeds go to support Operation Bigs, a one-to-one mentoring program that provides an extra layer of support to children and families with an active duty military parent. “Phil’s Big BBQ inspired 15 attendees to sign up and volunteer as a Big,” said S. Wayne Kay, president and CEO of BBBS. Additional sponsors included Richard & Richard Construction, Torrey Pines Bank, Fran Subaru, Coca-Cola and Blue Chair Bay Rum. Employees of Phil’s BBQ donated their time to set up and run the event.

Cygnet Theatre held a two night staged-reading benefit concert of the rock musical HAIR to support the Artist Advocate program. Cygnet supporters Wendy Nash and Ralph Johnson were sponsors. Over $60,000 was raised to support this program, which is a collaboration of donors coming together to support the artists that make it happen.

Sharp Hospicecare 14th Annual Benefit Dinner and Regatta, Celebrating Life, is being held on Aug. 26-27. Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association are partnering with Sharp Hospicecare to raise funds that will support Homes for Hospice program. Honorary Commodore Sponsors are Virginia Napierskie , Progressive Management Systems and Sodexo. The Benefit Dinner is being held Friday the 26th at Hotel del Coronado and the Regatta at the Coronado Yacht Club.

The Grossmont Healthcare District recognized St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center and hosted a check presentation to highlight GHD’s $24,375 grant to assist SMSC with on-site nursing services. SMSC educates and empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to realize their full potential. The Center also strives to educate the community about the realities of developmental disabilities, including Down Syndrome, Autism and Cerebral Palsy.
The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy received an SDG&E “Environmental Champions” award along with a $10,000 check. The funds will be used to expand the Conservancy’s nature education program, Watershed Explorers. The program focuses on different aspects of the watershed and enables students to visit different areas in the San Dieguito River Park, see wildlife and learn about the importance of the cultural and natural resources of the watershed.
Price Philanthropies has offered a $100,000 matching grant to support the Blood Sweat & Tears Concert benefitting The Foundation For The Children of the Californias. The event is being held on Aug. 27 at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. Funds raised will go towards a new on-site dental clinic as the Hospital and also support the Hospital’s program for indigent patients and Foundation operations. “Rockin’ the Ranch” Concert for the Kids” will feature the iconic band, “Blood Sweat & Tears” and opening act, Constantine Maroulis, star of Broadway’s Rock of Ages.
Home Aid San Diego’s Homes Fore the Homeless Golf Tournament is being held on Aug. 26 at Maderas Golf Club. Funds raised are used to build new lives through housing and community outreach for San Diego’s homeless population.
