The 13th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon was held on Mar. 4 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The event is the American Heart Association’s national campaign sponsored by Macy*s and Estee Lauder and locally sponsored by UC San Diego Health. Other local sponsors include Barona Band of Mission Indians, Conrad Prebys and Debbie Turner, Swinerton Builders, Sycuan Casino, Takeda, US Bank, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns, Sharp Grossmont Hospital and Union Bank. A total of $350,000 was raised to help fund research and awareness programs to improve women’s heart disease prevention and treatment.The AHASD 2016 Legendary Women of the Heart honored included Audrey Geisel, Joye Blount, Rana Sampson, Reena Horowitz, Sheila Lipinsky and Lori DeMaria.

San Diego Police Foundation is presenting Women in Blue on Mar. 30 at the Hilton Bayfront San Diego. Those being honored are Police Detective Tammy Clendenen, Senior Property Evidence Supervisor Beverlay Harris and Police Officer II Susan de la Pena. Patti Rosco is the Honorary Chair. The three honorees will share their stories of aspiration, courage and accomplishment.
San Diego Air & Space Museum has announced its 27th Anniversary scholarship program to inspire students to tackle challenges of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines, and to make a difference in the world through innovative, adventurous spirit. Scholarships are given annually on behalf of four Museum administered scholarship funds: Bill Gibbs, R.A. Rearwin, Jennings Kelly Scarborough, and the Convair Alumni Association, as well as a special San Diego Air & Space Museum STEM scholarship.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, Union Bank has partnered with KPBS to honor two inspiring local heroes. Teodora Purcell, volunteer attorney, Casa Cornelia Law Center and Jeeni Criscenzo, founder, Amikas. The honorees demonstrate a shared commitment to providing their communities with the tools to thrive in today’s changing world. They will be honored at a private dinner with their families and executives from Union Bank and KPBS. “Local Heroes like Teodora Purcell and Jeeni Criscenzo work day-in-and-out to improve the lives of others,” said Tom Karlo, KPBS general manager.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County announced that John Frager, Executive Managing Director of CBRE has been selected as the “Person of the Year” and will be honored at the 54th Annual Gourmet Dinner which is being held on Oct. 20 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. Frager has been a longtime supporter of BBBS of SDC and has served as board chair for three consecutive years. In addition, he serves on numerous charitable and community endeavors and is currently serving on the campaign cabinet for Scripps Prebys Cardiovascular Institute.

On Jan. 9 employees of Guild Mortgage volunteered at San Diego Food Bank to begin the Guild Giving Program for 2016. The Guild team is dedicated to serving the community through a variety of aspects, including helping those who struggle with hunger. Three more volunteer projects will be scheduled during the year.
Miramar Federal Credit Union partnered with Pro Kids/The First Tee of San Diego, to deliver financial literacy workshops to middle school members of Pro Kids’ Academy . Children in City Heights and Oceanside participated in small workshops led by MFed using golf analogies to make the subject material accessible and help kids make wise financial choices as they mature.
The San Diego Chapter of ARCS Foundation is holding its annual Scientist of the Year Dinner on Apr. 1 at the Hilton San Diego Resort. Dr. Lawrence Goldstein, Professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and the Department of Neurosciences of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, is being honored as ARCS 30th Scientist of the Year. The event will also showcase the 2015/2016 ARCS Scholars attending UCSD, SDSU, USD and TSRI, who will present posters highlighting their current research in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
