The La Jolla Playhouse 2016 Gala was held on Mar. 19 and featured a tribute to the life, career and legacy of Playhouse co-founder Gregory Peck. Peck’s children, Cecilia Peck Voll, Carey Peck and Stephen Peck were in attendance as was Angie Dickinson. Debby Jacobs chaired the event which raised $1 million to support the theatre’s Education & Outreach and New Play Development Programs. Lead sponsors included Qualcomm, Van Cleef & Arpels and Merrill Lynch.

Bill Walton Receives Sycuan CHeck

Sycuan Casino presented a $50,000 check to basketball legend Bill Walton on behalf of the Challenged Athletes Foundation. The donation is part of the casino’s promise to the organization to donate at least 5% of its GameDay Sports Bar & Grill’s annual sales which began in 2012. The casino held an event on Mar. 20 to commemorate the occasion. Walton met and greeted casino patrons alongside several athletes connected with the CAF.

Tri-City Hospital Gala

Tri-City Hospital Foundation hosted their “James Bond Casino Night” fundraiser on Mar. 5. The funds raised benefit the expansion and renovation of the neonatal intensive care unit for babies at Tri-City Medical Center, the only Level III NICU in North County. After a $1.2 million renovation wrapping up this summer, the NICU will have more space and state-of-the-art tools for physicians and nurses as well as new private rooms for mothers to be close to their child.

Schubach Aviation is donating one cent from every mile flown in 2016 to two San Diego organizations: Promises2Kids serving the needs of foster youth; and Shelter to Soldier bringing post-9/11 combat veterans together with trained rescue dogs to help heal and move forward. The year-long campaign expects to raise $6,000 for each of the charities.

Just In Time For Foster Youth

Just In Time For Foster Youth

Walk the Talk, a Just in Time for Foster Youth, was held on Mar. 12 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. The event raised $300,000 for the Youth’s programs and services benefitting transitioning foster youth. The Presenting Sponsor for the event was US Bank. Otis Eastern was Platinum Sponsor and Gold Sponsors included San Diego Social Venture Partners and SDGE/A Sempra Energy Utility. Marty Goodman was honored at the event for his commitment to the JIT mission and the youth served. Proceeds benefit foster youth ages 18-26 to help them transition into achieving self-sufficiency and well-being.

Mars North America sponsored the Maritime Museum’s 5th annual Chocolate Festival held on Apr. 3. Fifteen vendors showcased various types of chocolate. Kids enjoyed chocolate pizza and crafts and adults enjoyed chocolate and wine pairing and baking and cooking with chocolate demonstrations.

The SEAL Naval Special Warfare Family Foundation recognized sponsors for its fifth annual fundraiser to be held on Apr. 30 at the Del Mar Country Club. The dollars raised provide direct support of the NSW families on a local, national and global scale. This year’s sponsors include American Airlines, Simpson Chevrolet Buick GMC, Doug Allred Company, LMNewman Family Foundation, ResMed, Cymer, Wells Fargo, Bumble Bee Seafoods and Corky Pest Control.

HomeAid San Diego, Brookfield Residential and other building and business partners have generated $1 million to build Noah Homes for adults with developmental disabilities and memory issues leaving $1 million yet to be raised to complete 20 homes for people with developmental disabilities who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other related dementia. On Mar. 29 Noah Homes started the vertical build on the first memory care homes for people with developmental disabilities.

St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center is the 2016 recipient of the Mosaic Marathon project as part of the Society of American Mosaic Artists annual conference being held in San Diego from Apr. 4-8. To honor and acknowledge SMSC’s 50th year of service, artists at Sophie’s Gallery were invited to create elements to be included in the mosaic.
