A $6,500 Grossmont Healthcare District grant to Crisis House will bolster Project Homeless Connect—East County, a one-day one-stop-shop that brings together homeless men, women, and children and a bevy of service providers. Since 2013, Project Homeless Connect—East County has been providing the transient population access to free haircuts, clothing, identification paperwork, legal help, medical checkups, pastoral counseling, addiction treatment, and housing and employment assistance. The last event, held in April, saw 192 adults and 21 children.
“Our goal with PHC is to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty and make it easy for homeless individuals and families to access necessary services for rebuilding their lives and remaining safe, healthy and self-sufficient,” said Mary Case, Crisis House’s executive director.

The San Diego Police Foundation’s annual Gold Shield Gala held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront September 22 raised $285,000 to support SDPD officers and their canine crime-fighting companions. The special charitable focus for the Heart of Gold-themed gala was the department’s K9 Crimefighter Campaign, which funds new police dogs and training.

Nonprofit animal rescue group SPOT is holding a Howl-o-Wine fundraiser at Witch Creek Winery October 21
Nonprofit dog-and-cat-rescue group SPOT (Saving Pets One at a Time) will be on the lookout this Sunday, October 21, for the most dapper dogs and spooky pooches at the Witch Creek Winery in Carlsbad. SPOT volunteers are hosting a Howl-o-Wine dog costume contest to raise money to find homes for shelter dogs and cats facing euthanasia. Tickets, available at spotsavespets.org, are $20 and include 2 glasses of wine and a charcuterie plate.
