San Ysidro Health Center’s Black, White & Bling Bash Raises $400,000

The 8th annual Black, White & Bling Bash was held on June 24 at the Hotel del Coronado. The event raised a record- breaking amount of $400,000, which will go directly towards helping the organization continue to provide high-quality health services to patients across San Diego County. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher received the Health Champion award. Sponsors included California Retina Associates and Union Bank as Platinum Sponsors. Other sponsors were California Bank & Trust, Community Health Group, Scripps, and Barney & Barney.

RMDHCSD Red Shoe Day

The 2017 Red Shoe Day raised $212,000 to benefit San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House, which helps keep families close to each other and provides the care they need while children are undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Volunteers wearing bright yellow shirts and wacky accessories stood at major intersections to collect donations in iconic big, red shoes. Contributions were made in spare change and cash donations as well as from corporate sponsorships and contributions made at McDonald’s restaurants in San Diego County. Presenting sponsors were Wells Fargo, CBS 8, CW, and McDonald’s.

The Downtown San Diego Lions Club Welfare Foundation donated $400,000 to support the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Institute’s BioBank. In recognition of their support, the BioBank research lab has been named the Downtown San Diego Lions Club BioBank for Vision. The funds will aid research and help to better diagnose, prevent, and treat eye diseases.

Helen Woodward winners Honey Bear & Lola

Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 5th Annual PAWmicon Convention was held on July 15 at Hazard Center. The event was held the weekend prior to Comic-Con to allow attendees to take in both types of animated characters. Top prizes went to “Honey Bear and Lola” as Batman and Robin in the PAWSplay Contest for superheroes and their heroic dogs. The event raised $1,700 for Helen Woodward.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

On July 10, as part of the Subaru Love Promise, Frank Subaru met with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society San Diego at Rady Children’s Hospital to present a $5,000 donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society San Diego and to donate Frank Subaru blankets and lunch boxes filled with crayons and other crafts to Rady Children’s Hospital.

The Corporate Directors Forum has named its 2017 Director of the Year awards. Those who received awards were Martha Demski, the Corporate Governance award; Kevin Gorman, the Enhancement of Economic Value honoree; Ron Fowler, Corporate Citizenship award; Doug Obenshain, Corporate Governance for a non-profit; Cam Garner, Companies in Transition recognition; and Harvey White, Lifetime Achievement award.

Prado Gala

Patrons of the Prado celebrated 20 years on July 8 at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. The Masterpiece Gala – Noche de Suenos (Night of Dreams) raised $300,00, which will benefit The Old Globe, Fleet Science Center, San Diego Junior theatre, San Diego Museum of Art, and Timken Museum of Art. The organization’s program, Bucks4Buses, will also receive a portion of the funds. The evening event was catered by Chef Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemouse Grille who also contributed wine dinners to the Live Auction.

San Diego County Credit Union Stuff the Bus is collecting school supplies for the homeless students in San Diego County. The school supply drive is being held in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education. Supplies can be dropped off at the SDCCU locations as well as at the two Stuff the Bus school buses that will be on tour around the city.
