How a couple's experiences shaped their philanthropy

Former B-24 navigator Blaine Briggs, who made his fortune in medical forms printing, and his wife La Verne lost a son to leukemia in 1968. Cancer care was simply not advanced enough at that time. The loss and their experience in the medical forms business were the catalyst for their interest in supporting advanced medical care and they began donating to Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. A death in the family opened his eyes to ways health care could be improved, and he and his wife Kaye found innovative ways to advance patient care.
