St. Germaine Children’s Charity hosted the 32nd Silver Tea on Dec. 8. Through ticket sales, donations and auction, the organization raised $100,000. All proceeds will be donated in June to local Child Abuse Prevention Programs selected as the recipients. Underwriters included the Estate of Margaret Mitchell Polak, Donald and Taunya Daley Jr. and Patricia Ortlieb. “The Silver Tea is really a collaborative event, created by our devoted members and supporters who share a deep passion for helping children out of abuse and preventing it from ever happening,” said Nicole Hall-Brown, Silver Tea Chair.

Monarch School has been chosen as the PGA TOUR Charity of the Year. They will receive a $30,000 grant from the PGA TOUR and will be featured in a PGA TOUR-produced television public service announcement throughout the 2016 season. For over 25 years, Monarch School has embraced and assisted thousands of students impacted by homelessness through a comprehensive program designed for academic achievement, life skills and social and emotional growth. The monetary grant will help with the school’s one-on-one academic programs.

Kiva Learning Center for Women & Children donors and volunteers served a holiday lunch to the women and children on Dec. 20. The lunch was organized by Lizzette Torres-Mathews and Dr. Sean Daneshmand.  Daneshmand and his partners take care of many pregnant women who are struggling with addiction. Kiva is a program that allows women to live alongside their children while residing in a recovery program as they are treated for alcohol and drug addiction.

Cygnet Theatre received a $187,000 grant from the James Irvine Foundation’s Exploring Engagement Fund. The two-year grant will be used to begin the research and implementation of a plan to provide quality theatre programs and mainstage shows for low-income military personnel and veterans in the San Diego area. The grant provides Cygnet the opportunity to expand on programs for the military and serve the diversity of the community.

The La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology received a $1 million gift from John Major and his wife Susan. “La Jolla Institute is a world-class organization that’s on the right track to create a world without disease and it deserves all the energy and support we can provide,” said John Major. With this grant, the Institute was able to recruit Ferhat Ay, an accomplished bioinformaticist as the Institute Leadership Professor in Computational Biology, to carry out work to yield the power of informatics to extract potentially life-saving information from the tidal wave of genomic data generated in the Institute’s laboratories every day.

Fantasy On Ice

Fantasy On Ice

Fantasy on Ice raised $105,000 to benefit the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s Hospital to help San Diego children affected with life threatening conditions. The rink was open from November 19th through January 3rd. San Diego Chargers and San Diego Gulls were partners with Fantasy on Ice.

United Through Reading received a $10,000 grant from the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation. The CKFF is dedicated to serving military through interactive experiences that enrich family relationships and recognizes that UTR provides such an experience for military families facing deployment.

Feeding America San Diego concluded the Month of a Million Meals campaign on Dec. 31 raising $577,108 equating to 2,308,435 meals. In partnership with ABC10, sister station Azteca San Diego 15 and Live Well San Diego, the goal of 1,000,000 meals was exceeded by over 1,000,000. In addition to campaign partners, ESET and Naked Café were contributors.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County recognized its “2015 Corporate Partner of the Year”, Millennium Health, and its “2015 Community Partner of the Year”, Council President Pro Tem Marti Emerald. They are recognized for their significant impact in the lives of San Diego youth and in the promotion and support of the San Diego mentoring movement.

When heavy rains threatened flooding in JA BizTown, the JA team traded high heels and professional suits for rain boots and shovels. The team moved 300 sand bags to prevent additional flooding damage in JA BizTown.
