The 11th annual Wine D’Vine Gala was held on Oct. 25 at the Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Hall. The $300,000 raised will provide care and support to foster children and families at Walden Family Services. “These proceeds will go a long way in helping us continue to be an advocate for San Diego’s foster youth,” said Teresa Stivers, Executive Director of Walden Family Services. Walden’s scope of services also includes preparing youth to successfully transition from foster care to adulthood, and support to parents to help end the cycle of child abuse. The Presenting sponsors were Art and Michelle Candland and the VIP reception sponsors were Maryanne Carlin and Harley Sefton.

The City Ballet of San Diego’s 20th Annual Gala – Swing, Swing, Swing, was held at the US Grant Hotel on Nov. 1. Gala Honorary Chairs Barbie and Dan Spinazzola started off The Call to the Heart paddle raise with a $25,000 challenge which was matched by Gala Patrons and another $1,000 donation by the Spinazzolas. A total of $86,000 was raised for the company’s Education Programs including Discover a Dancer and Ballet Goes to School.

Grossmont Hospital Foundation celebrated its 29th Anniversary Gala on Nov. 8 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel. “Heart of Havana” raised $292,000 toward Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s planned Heart and Vascular Center. A $10 million capital campaign was launched in April of 2013 to finance the acquisition of medical technology and equipment for the Center. Connie Conard and Ruth Simpson co-chaired the gala and Ed and Sandy Burr were the honorary chairs. Presenting Sponsors included the Glenn Napierskie Family and Sharp Grossmont Hospital Medical staff. Visionary Sponsors were the Burr Family Foundation and the Shea family.

San Diego Symphony’s Opus 2014 Gala was held on Oct. 25 at Jacobs Music Center and The University Club. The event chaired by Helene and George Gould, raised a record-breaking $620,000. The funds will be used to support the San Diego Symphony organization and bring music education to 60,000 students throughout San Diego County. Supporters of the Gala included Joan and Irwin Jacobs, George and Helene Gould, Van Cleef & Arpels who sponsored the Cocktail Party and the post-concert. Pianist Loa Astanova was the guest artist of The Park Foundation 2014-2016 tour.

Mission Federal Credit Union gift to JA Finance Park
Mission Federal Credit Union donated $1 million to support JA Finance Park, a program of Junior Achievement of San Diego County. The program focusing on increasing the financial literacy of San Diego high school students, will be named Mission Fed JA Finance Park. The program entails the redevelopment of Junior Achievement curriculum with the use of Tablets and Mobile Apps to prepare tech-savvy millennials for financial success.
The 6th annual LightBridge Hospice Community Foundation 5K walk was held at Liberty Station on Oct. 26. A total of $35,000 was raised to fund exceptional end-of-life programs for hospice patients and their loved ones. Sponsors included Ed Robinson, SeaCrest Retirement Village, Nico Insurance Services, Palomar Medical Group and California Bank & Trust.

Huntington’s Disease
The San Diego Chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s 14th annual Celebration of Hope Gala was held on Oct. 17 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel. A total of $112,000 was raised to serve ongoing research and education toward finding a cure and provide support services for those living with Huntington’s disease. The event was presented by Peggy and Eric Johnson, Qualcomm and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians. Rolf Benirschke was recognized with the 2014 Guthrie Award for his support of the HD community. Three noted San Diego coaches were featured to share some of the key influences on their lives as they advanced through their professions. Mark Grant emceed and Buddy Black, Steve Fisher and Mike McCoy shared some of their experiences.
