Pathways to Peace Rotary District 5340 and Downtown San Diego Breakfast Rotary Club presented Mayor Todd Gloria with the 2014 Peacemaker Award at its meeting on Feb. 26 at the University Club. The Award is designed to honor members of the community who have made a significant difference in promoting tolerance, understanding, conflict resolution and peace. Gloria has been serving as Interim Mayor since last August and is recognized for bringing credibility back to San Diego in the wake of unprecedented political events.
San Diego Symphony presented the America’s Best Donovan’s & Chappellet Wine Dinner on Feb. 9 at Donovan’s La Jolla. Alexis and Ron Fowler and Sally and Dan Shea were co-chairs of the evening and Steve Tyrell was the guest performer. The $85,000 raised will benefit the Symphony’s music education programs which currently serve 61,000 students throughout San Diego County. The Sheas and Fowlers donated the food and the Padres and Chargers items which were part of the auction.

The Downtown San Diego Partnership held The 2014 Imagine Downtown: Unwired Annual Installation Dinner on Feb. 13 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel. Dr. Paul Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm was the guest speaker. The event raised $100,000 to support the works of DSDP. Ace Parking was the Title Sponsor and Qualcomm was the Technology Sponsor. The VIP Reception was sponsored by Clark Construction. Other sponsors included Bridgepoint Education, Affirmed Housing Group, AT&T and Bosa Development Corporation.
The National Conflict Resolution Center held its 26th annual Peacemaker Awards on Mar. 1 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. Congressman John Lewis was the recipient of the NCRC National Peacemaker Award. Lewis is a politician committed to justice and nonviolence and one of the key figures of the American civil rights movement. A Reason to Survive (ARTS) received the Local Peacemaker Award. ARTS is a nationally recognized organization that believes in the power of the arts and creativity to transform lives – especially those of kids.
In celebration of Black History Month, Union Bank in partnership with KPBS, is honoring extraordinary African Americans as local heroes. The 2014 honorees are: Tessie Bonner, former professor and breast cancer awareness advocate; and J.T. Inge, Joe Earl Jackson and Dr. Carrel Reavis, Original Montford Point Marines. The program pays tribute to exemplary leaders who are making a difference and enriching the lives of others by improving their community, region and the world at large. Tom Karlo, KPBS general manager, said It is a privilege to highlight the contributions of these local heroes within our programming. From fighting for our country to equipping women with the tools to fight for their health, these individuals have positively influenced the African American community and San Diego at large.”

Senior Community Centers is hosting a gallery—type photography exhibit and reception on Apr. 3 at the Port Pavilion on the Broadway Pier to raise funds for its programs assisting low-income and homeless seniors in San Diego. Gary and Mary West are being honored at “Experience of a Lifetime”. Proceeds will support the Homeless Prevention Program.
Feeding America San Diego and the Boy Scouts of America San Diego-Imperial Council kicked off this year’s campaign to help kids feed kids, Scouting For Food on Mar. 1 at the FASD distribution center in Mira Mesa. Through the month of March, scouts canvas select neighborhoods to spread the word about the program. Troops and their leaders leave door hangers with instructions for residents on how to donate food and the following week scouts return to each neighborhood to pick up food donations.
The City of Chula Vista received an Organizational Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Center for Corporate Climate Leadership in partnership with the Association of Climate Change Officers, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions and The Climate Registry. The national awards program recognizes exemplary corporate, organizational, and individual leadership in response to climate change. The City of Chula Vista was recognized for its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; for establishing green building standards that set building energy efficiency requirements higher than state code, and other climate adaptation strategies that address the community’s vulnerabilities related to energy and water supplies.
