Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego received the largest give in the charity’s history. The $3.5 million gift from the Joseph Clayes III Charitable Trust will create the Joseph Clayes III Endowment Fund to provide an ongoing stream of funding to the organization. The great room in RMDHSD will be renamed the Joseph Clayes III Great Room. Endowment funding is key to ensuring the future of nonprofit organizations, according to Chuck Day, president and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. “This contribution will support thousands of families and give them the critical support they need by allowing them to stay nearby their sick or injured child and help them heal.”
St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation through their Education and Workforce Development initiative. The funds will help underwrite the cost of the Work Activity Program that supports the employment goals of approximately 50 adults with developmental disabilities.
San Diegans “Shave it Clean in 2013” to benefit St. Baldrick’s Foundation is being held on Mar. 9 at The Commons downtown from 12-4p.m. The goal is to raise $50,000 for the Foundation. Shave-a-Thons demonstrate individuals coming forth to shave their heads in solidarity with children undergoing cancer treatment. This is the event’s fifth year when San Diegans will shave their heads in the name of generating awareness, funding research for childhood cancer, and continuing to help survivors live long and healthy lives.
Rolling Readers celebrated the 2nd Anniversary of its “Share your Love of Reading” event on Valentine’s Day. The campaign raises awareness about the importance of literacy and reading aloud to children with several business and education leaders acting as Honorary Readers. Mission Federal Credit Union was this year’s title sponsor. The elementary schools who participated were Alcott, Alvin Dunn, Chase Avenue, E.G. Garrison Washington and Jefferson.
Southern Caregiver Resource Center was recognized by The Rosalynn Carter Institute on Caregiving and Johnson & Johnson for its CALMA and CUIDAR programs which serve Latino family caregivers in San Diego’s South Bay region. They were presented with a $20,000 grant as well as a statuette designed by Frank Eliscu, the designer of the Heisman Trophy.
Edward E. Marsh has gifted most of his collections of science fiction to the San Diego State University’s Love Library. Marsh spent thirty years and millions of dollars assembling one of the largest and most significant collections. The gift, valued at more than $2.25 million, will be displayed in the “Edward Marsh Golden Age of Science Fiction Room,” created specifically to house these works.
The 2013 La Jolla Playhouse Gala is scheduled for Mar. 9 at the Playhouse theatres. The legendary band The Flaming Lips will be the featured entertainment.
Kids Included Together is hosting an International Conference on inclusion at the Manchester Grand Hyatt on Mar. 13-15. Parents, teachers, before & after school providers, recreation professionals, inclusion facilitators, and advocates will network, enhance professional development and learn new ways to include children of all abilities.
The Classics Philharmonic Orchestra celebrated the music, dance and song of Mexico On Jan. 27 at the Balboa Theatre downtown. Classic 4 Kids presented the bilingual concert. Mariachi Garibaldi of Southwestern College, under the direction of Jeff Nevin and traditional folkloric dancers brought the concert to life. “A lot of the Mariachi repertoire fits very well with a symphony orchestra,” Jeff Nevin, director of Mariachi Activities at Southwestern College shares. “It isn’t a hard thing to combine them, but the mix of the different elements from both musical parties is really something special.
