The Women’s Auxiliary of Seacrest Village Retirement Comunities will honor Sylvia and David Geffen at the 36th Annual Gala, Sapphire Jubilee, on Feb. 1 at the Hyatt Regency la Jolla at Aventine. The Geffens have supported numerous organizations and projects that help promote Jewish traditions and culture. Sylvia is the President of the Seacrest Foundation which raises funds to support Seacrest Village in its service to the elderly. Her mother, Sigrid Fischer was one of the leaders of the Women’s Auxiliary and helped to raise funds for many years through her work on the Annual Gala. The event will celebrate 70 years of philanthropic support for San Diego’s seniors and this year will focus on raising monies for the Resident Assistance Fund.
AT&T employees teamed up with local educators to mentor 21 high school students on topics such as decision making, financial literacy, communication skills and career planning at the Trade Street AT&T campus. Aspire Mentoring Academy provides an opportunity for employees to be a memorable influence in a young person’s life, helping them stay on track to graduate from high school and succeed in college, the workforce and beyond.
Volunteers from gap intelligence, distributed Christmas presents they donated to Elilio Nares Foundation children who are battling cancer in the Hematology/Oncology Unit at Rady Children’s Hospital. They were joined by volunteers from ENF, 501st Legion, and a representative from DaVita who presented ENF with a check for $1,000.

KPBS Celebrates! Event will be held on Jan. 11 at the US Grant Hotel and will honor KPBS Hall of Fame inductees and also raise funds to support KPBS’ mission. Special guest appearances will be made by Lesley Nicol and Laura Carmichael, Downton Abbey’s actresses. The Hall of Fame inductees being honored are Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Weber, SDSU President Emeritus and Stephanie Bergsma, former KPBS Associate General Manager.
San Diego-based Petco gave $500,000 in grant money to several animal welfare groups nationwide. The Petco Foundation and The Ellen DeGeneres Show announced the 33 winners of its Holiday Wishes grant campaign. The winning organizations were chosen based on the quality of the organizations’ overall work and the impact of their top success story.
The Greater San Diego Association of Realtors held its annual Holiday House event on Dec. 6. The SDAR takes over a home and fills it with toys, household items and non-perishable food. The donations are then given to local charities. This year the charities served through the event were The Angels Depot, Homefront San Diego, PAWS San Diego, It’s All About the Kids and Second Chance.
Holiday Angels, a special program in partnership with United Parcel Service and Elderhelp, delivered a festive holiday package to seniors in the care of ElderHelp of San Diego. Packages were hand delivered by UPS volunteers. PAWS San Diego provided dog food and cat food for seniors with pets. Other sponsors included SDG&E, a Sempra Utility, Cindi Hill Compliance Advisors, Intuit employees and Sayre Consulting. ElderHelp Executive Director, Deborah Martin said “For many in our care, this may be the only gift and visitor they see throughout the holiday season.”
The San Diego City Council approved a Lease Purchase Agreement with the San Diego Community Land Trust to enable the Trust to complete its due diligence on 3.3 acres in the Nestor area of Southern San Diego. The development of 16 permanently affordable homes for sale to working families in San Diego will be built upon approval of the final development plan.
