Luau and Longboard Invitational
The San Diego Center for Children’s 126th anniversary dinner “IMAGINE” held on June 20 at the US Grant Hotel, raised $235,000. The Sycuan Band of The Kumeyaay Nation were the Presenting Sponsor. Gold Sponsors included Darlene Marcos Shiley, US Bank and Southwest Airlines. Other sponsors included Pepsi, SDG&E and Union Bank. All of the funds raised help San Diego’s most vulnerable children heal and grow into successful adults. SDCC is the oldest accredited children’s center offering comprehensive behavioral health programs.
The 20th Annual Luau and Longboard Invitational benefitting the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center is being held on Aug. 18 at the beach near Scripps Pier in La Jolla. The Rell Sunn Award will be presented to the 2013 honoree Kary Mullis, who received a Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1993 for his invention of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Some of the participating surf legends include Robert August, star of the 1966 surf documentary The Endless Summer and Fernando Aguerre, founder of Reef and president of the International Surfing Association.
Padres
San Diego Padres catcher Nick Hundley participated in the Padres Reading Corner presented by Ashford University at the Lemon Grove Library branch. Hundley read to a group of children and presented a $1,000 donation to the San Diego County Library on behalf of the Padres Foundation and Ashford University. The Padres also held their First Responders salute of the season, highlighting San Diego Fire-Rescue and San Diego lifeguards. The Padres Foundation, in partnership with Donovan’s Steak and Chop House, presented a $10,000 donation to FirefighterAid, to support its mission of supporting spouses and children of fallen firefighters and provide care and comfort to injured, sick and disabled members of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Dept.
Red Shoe Day
The annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser benefitting Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego netted $165,000 in cash donations. A group of 1,400 volunteers were at San Diego County intersections with size 14 red shoes to collect donations. One generous donor drove up to an intersection of Lomas Santa Fe Drive and Santa Helena in a Maserati and donated $5,000 in cash. Chuck Day, president and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego said, “Each donation makes an impact in the lives of the families who stay at our 47-bedroom facility or visit our day-use Family Care Center for a comforting meal or other services.”
First 5 San Diego is launching its new healthy eating initiative partnership with Vons on July 10 at the Mission Hills store. The initiative encourages parents and caregivers to provide healthy food choices to children at an early age, which includes eating fruits and vegetables, watching portion sizes, drinking water, and consuming dairy products in daily meals.
The Cohn Restaurant Group was one of ten California-based companies recognized at the state’s winners of the 2013 Restaurant Neighbor Award by the California Restaurant Association. Cohns were the only San Diego restaurant group included in the 10. All of the restaurants are national finalists for the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Neighbor Awards which seek to recognize and honor the generosity of the restaurant and food service. The Cohns were honored for their work with Garfield High School Foundation, their co-founded organization which was formed to raise funds for the culinary arts program at Garfield High School, an alternative continuation school in downtown San Diego.
Community Housing Works’ FaceLift
Volunteers from Torrey Pines Bank gathered in City Heights on June 8 to support Community Housing Works’ FaceLift, an annual event that transforms neighborhoods in City Heights and builds home equity and pride in the community. The bank raised $2,800 to purchase supplies and defray expenses and contributed $2,200 to reach the $5,000 required amount to participate. Volunteers painted homes and made improvements such as planting flowers and trees and removing trash and landscaping.
FaceLift helps senior citizens, disabled persons and low-income families who need assistance with their homes. Torrey Pines Bank has partnered with CHW for over seven years.
Celgene Corporation raised $8,500 at its “Baskets and Beverages” benefit with proceeds going to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk. The San Diego division’s event was organized by the C3-Celgene Crusaders for Cures team and funds go towards cancer patients and survivors.
