Co-Chairs Annette and Dan Bradbury and Lisette and Mick Farrell welcomed 300 guests to Starry Starry Night, the Voices for Children Gala held on Sept. 28 at the Rancho Valencia Resort, raised $1 million which will provide more than 400 additional foster children with Court Appointed Special Advocates. These volunteers work directly with foster children and speak on their behalf in the courtroom, classroom, and community. A portion of the funds raised will be matched by a donor who has pledged to match dollar for dollar all gifts from new donors and increased gifts from current donors, up to $1 million. The challenge includes gifts received until June, 2014.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s U.S.-Mexico Border 2020 Program awarded $45,000 to 4Walls International for the construction of a bi-national park space that will use trash pulled from the Tijuana River Valley as building materials. “This project will help make accessible a beautiful natural area along the border that most people don’t get to experience. It is part of a network of outdoor places for the entire region to enjoy,” said BongHwan Kim, Executive Director of the San Diego Center for Civic Engagement at The San Diego Foundation. On the U.S. side, 4Walls International will create an inviting, culturally relevant “Border Gateway to Nature” by improving signage and access points to the park, and by creating artistic elements and park benches made of trash collected from the Tijuana River estuary.
San Diego’s new Central Library, in partnership with the San Diego Workforce Partnership and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, will offer free career development services to job seekers through the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Career Center which opened on Sept. 30. The Career Center was funded by a $400,000 donation from Bank of America Merrill Lynch. In addition, they sponsored a Reading Room for students and visitors to use for studying and reading.
Chefs Showdown Winners
Sam the Cooking Guy hosted the 9th Annual Chef Showdown Culinary Competition on Sept. 26 at the NTC Promenade benefitting Center for Community Solutions. Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, Cups, dacor, Tabor Communications, Sycuan and Nordstrom were among the sponsors. The $150,000 raised will support the programs of CCS. Amy Dibiase was the captain of the winning team.
The La Jolla Festival of the Arts is produced by the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Foundation and raises funds to support programs for San Diegans with disabilities. LIFA receives funding from the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture as well as other partners which include San Diego Volvo, Sharp HealthCare Foundation, Solar City, Wyndham Resorts and CohnReznick. The 2014 event will be held at UC San Diego Warren Field on the third weekend of June.
The University of San Diego inaugurated the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering on Sept. 26. USD’s Engineering Program was funded by a $20 million gift from Darlene Marcos Shiley. Shiley urged engineering students to aim for successes similar to those of her late husband, Donald who invented the artificial heart valve. “If you can just step up to the plate and hit a couple of home runs for me, I’d really appreciate it because my life is dedicated to that man,” Shiley said.
John Berol, recipient of the Geisel Citation
The University of California, San Diego’s 10th annual Dinner in the Library was held on Sept. 12 in the University’s Geisel Library Building. Proceeds from the event support the UC San Diego Library’s most pressing needs, including its collections, resources and service. John Berol was the recipient of the Geisel Citation. Berol has provided consistent philanthropic support to the UC San Diego Library, including the establishment of the June Waterous Berol reading lounge in the Biomedical Library.
The New Children’s Museum will hold its 6th Annual Benefit on Oct. 12 at the Museum. Sponsors include Dole, Ralphs, Vons, ResMed Foundation, Rady Children’s Hospital, Nordstrom and Competitor Group. Proceeds go directly to satisfying creative appetites and providing extraordinary opportunities for children to think, play and create.
