Ten outstanding community leaders have been chosen as honorees at the National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon. The event, presented by National University’s Sanford Institute of Philanthropy, is being held on Nov. 9 at the San Diego Bayfront Hotel. The 43rd year of NPD is organized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, San Diego Chapter and recognizes the critical role philanthropy plays in our community. Among those being honored are: Carol Lazier as Philanthropist of the Year. Lazier was instrumental in leading San Diego Opera into its 50th year rather than shutting down to company. Rebecca Newman, Salk Institute will receive the Outstanding Development Professional Award for her leadership in raising $300 million for the Salk’s capital campaign.

BANK OF AMERICA GRANT

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation awarded $320,000 in grants to 22 organizations providing affordable housing and community development services in San Diego. The selected organizations play a critical role in connecting low-income people to such resources as affordable housing, financial coaching, neighborhood preservation and arts and culture programs that spur economic growth. The organizations receiving funding include Community Housing Works, Habitat For Humanity, San Diego Regional EDC, South Bay Community Services, Old Globe Theatre and Natural History Museum.

Tables for Tots created by designers and architects , were available for online bidding. This year’s theme is “Fun in the Jungle” and all of the money earned will help the Ronald McDonald House provide rooms, meals and other support to families with a child being treated at a local hospital. Over the past seven years, the event has raised $200,000 for the RMDH. Some of those participating in the creations were AVRP Studios, Cuningham Group,  and Jackson Design & Remodeling. Sponsors included, Pacific Building Group, Mission Federal Credit Union, David C. Copley Foundation and Avocado Company.

Urban Campout: Island Treasures is being held on Sept. 11 at Girl Scouts Campus in Balboa Park. Proceeds from the 18th annual “fun fundraiser for grown ups” will be earmarked for the construction of a new multipurpose cabin at the campus. Qualcomm is the Silver Level Sponsor and Wells Fargo, Holland America Line, Southwest Airlines are bronze level supporters. Other contributors include SDG&E, Delphi Financial, San Diego Chargers and Sycuan Casino.

Fur Ball

The 29th annual Fur Ball gala was held on Aug. 22 at the Gaines Street Campus. “Wines, Vines and Canines” had 600 guests and 200 canines in attendance for entertainment, auction and gourmet food catered by Jeffrey Strauss and Pamplemousse Grille. A total of $700,000 was raised to support the animals and programs of San Diego Humane Society. Sponsors included Petco, The Petco Foundation, VCA Animal Hospitals, Edco, Petsafe, Hill’s Pet Nutrition and California Coast Credit Union.

On Aug. 21 inner-city youth went surfing with law enforcement and public safety mentors at the annual STAR/PAL Surf Clinic at the Silver Strand State Beach. The day included water safety and surf lesson and included a BBQ lunch. Volunteers  from San Diego Police , County Probation and County Sheriff’s Departments as well as from COX Communications and Allied Barton Services participated in the event. Grants from HD Supply Facilities Maintenance and the San Diego Kiwanis Club Foundation made this day possible.

The Emilio Nares Foundation provided 50 “Loving Tabs” t-shirts for children at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco. The t-shirts were donated by San Diego-based Corrao Group. The t-shirts were designed by ENF with snaps on the shoulder and sleeve to facilitate access to chemotherapy for children with cancer.
