The Building Owners and Managers Association, BOMA San Diego’s annual Summer Work Party was held on July 26 at North County Community Services. The North River Road Preschool in Oceanside was the site where 40 volunteers from local companies worked to landscape areas of the playground, construct new benches, refurbish existing seating areas, repaint classroom walls, deep clean the restrooms and re-correct plumbing issues. BOMA San Diego holds this community service event each year and collects donations for member companies to benefit a selected non-profit organization.
The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation donated $40,000 in grants to benefit homeless animals in San Diego County. A grant of $20,000 will go to the San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus to install permanent air conditioning in the animal intake area and the remaining $20,000 will be used for outsourcing specialized veterinary services for animals in need of extra care. Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA expressed his gratitude to Doug Dawson and all the trustees of the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation for their generous donation. Weitzman said, “We are sincerely grateful for our longstanding partnership with the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation. It is a partnership that has created a brighter future for thousands of animals.”
Luau and Legends
The 21st annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational is being held on Aug. 17. The beachside fundraiser includes a surfing competition, Polynesian dancing, and a tropical buffet. Proceeds will support research and patient care at the University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center.
“With the investment of philanthropic support, UC San Diego scientists and physicians are transforming how we care for patients in our region and across the nation,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla.
This year’s event will honor Napoleone Ferrara, MD, in recognition of his research leading to new therapies for cancer.

The New Children’s Museum received a $30,000 grant from The National Endowment for the Arts to support the Museum’s Mass Creativity project. With the help of this grant, the project will continue for a third year in 2015. Julianne Markow, executive director and CEO of The New Children’s Museum said, “We saw the number of participants this year more than double in comparison to 2013, with more than 3,000 San Diegans benefitting from Mass Creativity. We are eager to build on this momentum and continue providing our community with new opportunities for creativity.”
Celebrating Life Benefit Dinner and Regatta supporting Sharp HospiceCare is being held on Aug. 22 & 23 at the Hotel del Coronado and the Coronado Yacht Club. Proceeds benefit Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice Program, which offers innovative living environments for people with life-limiting illnesses. The Honorary Admiral Sponsor is the Shea Family and the Honorary Commodore Sponsor is Virginia Napierskie.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation held the 6th annual Roll Out The Barrel event on July 19 at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay. A record-breaking $160,000 was raised to grant wishes to kids in the San Diego community. The Title Sponsor was Samsung and Platinum Sponsors were Spinal Elements, Sycuan Casino. Silver Sponsors were Wheels for Wishes and AMN Healthcare.
The 37th Haute with Heart Fashion Show is being held on Aug. 16 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. “We are excited to present the Haute with Heart Fashion Show again this year, with the help of our sponsors making it our 37th,” said Debra Emerson, CEO of St. Madeline Sophie’s Center.
