The 2015 Gala, “Club 3515”, was held on July 25 on the Globe’s campus in Balboa Park. The event included a cocktail reception on the Copley Plaza followed by a performance by Carmen Cusack. Dinner and dancing followed the performance. Underwriters included Audrey Geisel, Darlene Marcos Shiley, Conrad Prebys and Debra Turner and Karen and Stuart Tanz and patron gifts provided by Neiman Marcus. Proceeds will benefit the artistic and educational activities of the theatre.

Road Runner Sports celebrated the donation of their 1,000th handcycle to San Diegan Shanayha Welsh through their in house charity, “Athletes Helping Athletes”. Shanayha was joined by four former recipients on the Road Runner Sports campus. Shanayha was diagnosed with Arthogryposis, a condition caused by multiple congenital contractions.
Salk Professor Geoffrey Wahl is receiving the National Cancer Institute Outstanding Investigator Award, which encourages cancer research with breakthrough potential. Wahl will receive $7.9 million over a seven-year period to further his cancer research. Wahl and his team have made contributions to the development of technologies used throughout the world that have impacts in many fields.
The San Diego Foundation received a $750,000 grant to support Opening the Outdoors, a program that increases access to outdoor and natural spaces throughout San Diego. The funds are part of a $3 million, 3-year Community Partnership Grant from the Satterberg Foundation to San Diego Grantmakers. The Opening the Outdoors program aligns with Satterberg’s mission to promote a just society and a sustainable environment.

They are being honored for their outstanding support of the SDHS. Funds raised will support the mission of promoting the humane treatment of animals, prevent cruelty to animals and provide education to enhance the human-animal bond.

Ruth Westreich and Kent Johnson received the “Lights of LightBridge” award at the LightBridge Hospice Community Foundation annual celebration of inspirational people on July 31 at Old Poway Park. They were recognized for their commitment to hospice and palliative care. The event raised $31,000 to fund programs that nourish the spirit and provide therapeutic non-medical interventions for hospice patients.

Ironside Fish & Oyster held its 2nd Annual Shuck-A-Thon on Aug. 5. Seven female chefs from around the city took turns behind the raw bar, shucking oysters to raise money for seven different charities. A total of $5,613 was raised with Chef Carmine Lopez leading with $899 for Cure Huntington’s.
Art4Alz, “Collaboration4Cure”, a benefit for Alzheimer’s Association is being held on Aug. 24 at Robert Cromeans Salon. Collaborations include Darlene Shiley, Alzheimer’s Association, The City of San Diego, The County of San Diego, Sandford-Burnham-Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, The Scripps Research Institute, The Salk Institute, UCSD and the Venter Institute.
