USO San Diego raised more than $1 million at its 77th annual Stars and Stripes Gala. The For the Love of Country-themed celebration May 5 at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina was the most successful in the local USO chapter’s history. Civic leader, philanthropist, and veteran Jack McGrory was honored at the event.
“As a proud veteran of our armed forces, I believe it is our duty and responsibility to honor and serve those men and women who sacrifice so much on our behalf,” he said.
The USO runs centers on military installations around the world. In San Diego, it staffs the Neil Ash Airport Center at Lindbergh Field, where members of the military can take a load off while in transit, and a center downtown, and participates in various community outreach programs.
“As one of the leading military cities in the world, San Diego and our USO San Diego team serve more than 260,000 military members and their families at our award-winning Neil Ash USO San Diego Airport Center and our downtown San Diego facility. We can only accomplish this with a dedicated and compassionate community of staff, volunteers, and magnanimous supporters who work together to honor, respect, and elevate the spirit of all military and their families,” said Lorin Stewart, CEO of USO San Diego.

The Monarch School more than doubled their goal of $500,000 at its annual fundraiser, Building Bright Futures, presented by Major League Baseball. The $1.1 million total included a matching donation from Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler and his wife, Alexis, a Monarch School board member. More than 400 people attended the event at the Nat and Flora Bosa campus April 26, including members of the Padres organization and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. Padres Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman and his wife, Tracey, were event chairs. The proceeds will go toward supporting the educational needs of students facing homelessness.

Guests at Voices for Children’s 7th annual Wine Women & Shoes May 12 were treated to a fashion show, live auction, and a wall of wine. The afternoon event at the Del Mar Plaza raised around $340,000 for the organization’s Court Appointed Special Advocate program to assist foster youth. The fashionable fete was co-chaired by Patricia Brutten and Marina Marrelli and featured a “Best in Shoe” competition, judged by NBC7’s Catherine Garcia.
