In the latest addition to San Diego’s flourishing jiu-jitsu scene, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Miramar, a direct affiliate of the Gracie Humaita academy in Brazil, recently opened off Miramar Road. The martial arts gym offers classes for students of all levels. “San Diego is a very health-conscious city, the weather is perfect, and Brazilians love the beach lifestyle,” instructor and black belt professor Joao “Johnny” Faria says about the sport’s rabid following in San Diego, the largest outside its native country. He says the sport offers both physical and mental health benefits, including self-defense skills, increased confidence and patience, and improvements in physical fitness.
