Try a Mindful Triathlon

Finally, an event for us noncompetitive types

If you want more of a mental challenge than a physical one, register for Wanderlust’s annual Mindful Triathlon in Liberty Station on May 8. Instead of swimming, biking, and running, you’ll run or walk a 5K, do 75 minutes of yoga, and then finish with 30 minutes of meditation.

There isn’t much competition, but that’s the point, says Pete Hess, whose Pacific Beach–based company, High Performance Movement, helps manage the race. The point isn’t to finish first, but to do a mindful run followed by calming yoga and meditation. “It’s very uplifting; everyone’s there to support each other and think about wellness.”

The San Diego race is part of a series hosted by Wanderlust, which also puts on yoga and meditation festivals. In its third year, the Wanderlust triathlon series has spread to 30 cities across the world. Hess says he thinks increased focus on mental and physical wellness means the movement will continue to catch on.
