The University of California San Diego has received a $5 million gift from ResMed Inc. The donation was made in honor of ResMed’s founder and chairman of the board, Peter Farrell and will support sleep medicine research and care at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. The funding will establish the Peter C. Farrell Sleep Center of Excellence, in addition to the Peter C. Farrell Presidential Chair in Pulmonary Medicine. An additional $500,000 was matched by the UC system’s Presidential Match for Endowed Chairs. “Sleep disorders make up a critical area of medicine that needs further investigation and increased awareness,” said Mick Farrell, CEO of ResMed.
The 18th annual Garfield High School Foundation Thanksgiving luncheon is being held at the Prado on Nov. 19. David and Lesley Cohn of the Cohn Restaurant Group started a Culinary Arts Program at Garfield High School, a continuation school in downtown San Diego for last chance students. Since its inception the Cohns have helped to raise $300,000 for the foundation. The luncheon is a Thanksgiving meal cooked and served banquet-style by the culinary students under instruction of the Prado chefs and all food and materials are donated by the Cohns. All proceeds go towards the Foundation to fund educational programs and leftover food is sent to local homeless shelters.

Graced by Grit, a Solana Beach athletic attire boutique, is hosting a reception for The Notables of San Diego Symphony. Symphony Assistant Conductor Sameer Patel will be on hand to greet guests who will be treated to champagne, refreshments and music. 20% of proceeds from purchases made will go to the outreach and educational programs of San Diego Symphony.
United Through Reading received the 2015 American Prize of the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program and a gift of $50,000. UTR was selected for having made a significant and measurable contribution to increasing literacy levels and the national awareness of the importance of literacy. “Our organization works very hard to ensure that every military child can benefit from the read-alout experience, as we know the impact it can have on early literacy development and growth,” said Sally Ann Zoll, CEO of UTR.
NAIOP San Diego raised $10,000 for HomeAid San Diego at its annual Palooza multi-event, team-oriented competition on Oct. 16. HomeAid will use the funds towar renovations completed at a former medical office building in Escondido to house the Interfaith Community Service Veteran’s Resource Center. “Our NAIOP chapter has a long history of impactful philanthropy, especially to benefit our troops and veterans,” said Dan Broderick, President of NAIOP San Diego.

Project concern international gala
Project Concern International raised $600,000 at its 27th annual Hands Across Borders gala in support of its work to enhance health, end hunger and overcome hardship around the globe. The event was held at the Omni La Costa Resort. In addition to the Hoehn and Zable families receiving PCI’s Legacy Award, three San Diego school leaders were recognized with PCI’s Heroes Award for encouraging global citizenship among their students. Sponsors included Hoehn Motors, Cubic Corporation, Southwest Airlines, The Moxie Foundation, Cooley and Qualcomm.

The Living Coast Discovery Center received a $25,000 Environmental Champions grant from San Diego Gas & Electric. The funds will be used to expand its Living Lab field trip program, Science Without Boundaries, and enable k-6 students from the National School District in National City to participate in the hands-on educational program. “The students that will benefit from this program come from neighborhoods with limited financial resources and may not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with local animals and learn about native habitats in such a fun and meaningful way,” said Ben Vallejos, Executive Director of the Living Coast Discovery Center.
